How does buy back process work on a totaled vehicle

Op - I hope you get it straightened out. One of the posters here described it best as multiple transactions. But keep in mind, once the insurance company pays the bank, your debt obligation is now complete. So its not a loss for you at this point. You're free!!! Now consider buying that car as...

Who here has a car wash membership?

Thank you for reminding me to cancel my membership! I have a local carwash member ship that I signed up for this year. My truck doesn't have great paint, but its OK and I'd like to keep it shiny and rust at bay as best I can. Its a contact wash, and the last time I went through, the top brush...

The average car loan today is $48,000

My wife and I currently have car loans, but combined are less than the average single loan. Our current situation allows us the luxury of having vehicles we want, but if we need to, we could further downsize. I'm constantly shocked at new car pricing, which isn't a surprise as I crest middle...

$5K to $7K budget what to buy - CRV vs Rav 4 vs Element vs xB

Yes. Any of those would be a good choice. I disagree with making what you have work. If your Dad has a hard time getting in and out, its likely not going to get better. In that price range, I wouldn't expect too much, but I'm guessing this will be a second car anyway? You'll likely be looking...

Are drilled and slotted rotors worth the cost?

I replaced the back brakes on my wife's Atlas with the Powerstop kit (pads and drilled/slotted rotors) because the stock ones wore out at about 40k miles. I picked them because of the corrosion coating (zinc?) and price was reasonable. No noticeable braking performance difference (better or...

    Power Steering fluid

I refilled my 2006 CRV with regular store brand PS fluid for Japanese cars. At 300k and after changing hoses due to rust and a PS pump due to operator error (my niece put coolant in the PS reservoir) I found no need to buy Honda fluid. Worked fine.

1985 suburban mark iv 454 build. What oil do you guys like?

Sweet Suburban! Love the look and the wheels! My 454 was thirsty too, but she was worn out from towing prior to me getting it and installing in my truck. I fed it a diet of cheap diesel 15w-40 and never had an issue. But again, mine was worn out.

Who here uses a torque wrench on the cv axle nut?

I'm probably guilty of the never-seize issue. Being a shade tree guy in NH makes me work on some rusty junk. And I've developed a love of never-seize that may not be entirely healthy. For what its worth I learned that proper fastener torque is not just for NASA engineers a long time ago. I was...

    why OCI's are variable ?

I can't believe nobody has brought this up yet: the nut behind the wheel! The BITOG crowd may actually go into anaphylactic shock just thinking about this, but the average person gives absolutely no thought to engine oil, OCI's or car maintenance in general. Its like taking the trash out. They...

    Atf color.

It looks dark to me. In your previous drains at 100k and 150k, did the fluid look the same? Better or worse? My guess is that you are now servicing it regularly and cleaning out some accumulated junk. I'd replace the pan with one that has a drain, and do regular changes going forward. 15-20K...

    Harbor freight electrical tape

I'm far from a professional electrician, but my opinion of the HF tape could not be lower. It has failed me in every application from wire taping to band aid replacement. Its even lousy at wrapping wood handled tools. HF stuff is funny. Some tools and material are great, and you would expect...

Your Opinion on Choosing an Oil Grade

The poor OP is hiding under a rock right now... Most people mentioned this, but that Camry will be fine on anything. Don't overthink it too much. Use the HPL or Mobil 1 or Amsoil. Or Supertech. Whatever you like. I won't jump in too far in the above argument, but to say that oil temps are...

(Low end) Xtool in the trash

I bought an Altel scan tool a few years ago to re-program my ignition switch on my Honda. Been absolutely flawless since, but I think they make their money on the software updates instead. Yearly updates are not insignificant in price. But its been too handy to not update.

Brake Bleeding...Pressure VS Vacuum and Preferred DIY Kits?

I've never tried the pressure style bleeders, but had no luck withe the vacuum ones. Honestly, I've had the best results with the el cheepo gravity bleed bottles. A little patience and plenty of brake fluid on hand is all you need.

Who wants to chat about 2025 Ford V6 3.5L "Ecoboost"?

No direct knowledge (as in I never owned one) but I have a friend with a an early 2015 3.5L Ecoboost. He has about 300k miles on it, oil changed on the minder at Ford dealers only, replaced both turbos recently but generally trouble free. He drove it all over the country, in all kinds of...
