That's what it looks like, when you drive 600 miles with loose wheel nuts.

In my initial post I said, that picture was taken with the new bearing assembly already in place - since the studs are part of the new assembly ... Here are the marks.

Finger tight/steel wheels - and yeah I have no idea, but the sound and the vibration started at the beginning of that trip.

That's what it looks like, when you drive 600 miles with loose wheel nuts.

That's exactly what it was - I had a flat tire a while ago, and ADAC (German road side assistance) put the spare wheel on for me. I always thought that steel wheels don't need retoque.

That's what it looks like, when you drive 600 miles with loose wheel nuts.

I did - as I said, it sounded like a failed wheel bearing.

That's what it looks like, when you drive 600 miles with loose wheel nuts.

Just came home from a 600 miles drive, sounded like the left front wheel baring is shot again, so I ordered a new one. When I had her on the lift to replace it, I noticed that the whole wheel was wobbling way more than just a shot bearing would allow, and that 4 of my wheel nuts where loose. The...

    New California tire criteria?

Well to some degree. Usually when you try to lower one component, you raise an other one. When you have "raw fuel" coming out of your exhaust though, you have a bunch of other stuff to fix first.

    New California tire criteria?

Pretty much every emission based regulation is hurting MPG. And that started way back, when they retarded the ignition in order to increase exhaust gas temperature (due to "lighting the fire late") to improve the effectiveness of the "afterburning" of hydrocarbons by the air injected into the...

    YouTube Mechanics

Well - actually the money is in sponsoring, affiliate links and product placement. The few cents you get from YT monetization for a thousand views is for the birds. Personally I like Uncle Tony, since I only work on older engines - 30s to 60s. David Vizard, who is hard to watch sometimes, but...

sgi - retro video on their hardware and software

I'm in the film industry since over 30 years now - most of the time as a DP, but I still do a lot of postproduction, editing and color grading. That brings back some sweet memories. I got a lot work done on the SGIs back in those days - Flame, Smoke, Softimage etc. Good times. Frank

What Happens When Oil Changes Are Ignored, Poor Care?

Well I posted the clearances of a 1950s engine and ZeeOSix the specs of a modern Coyote, sooooo.....

Well, let's say there was quite some leeway.

What Happens When Oil Changes Are Ignored, Poor Care?

Film thickness is limited by bearing clearance - so you can only work within that limitation anyway. Once the assembly is "floating" on an oil film, there is basically no wear - no mater what the viscosity (or age of oil) is - so it is only floating or not, nothing between it. Chemical...

What are you working on today?

Changing the right front hub assembly on the Explorer again - yay! That thing eats wheel bearings for breakfast for some reason.

What Happens When Oil Changes Are Ignored, Poor Care?

About half a quart every 5000 miles. Don't have removed the valve cover (pain in the ass) but I use a pinhole camera to have a look from time to time. If you are interested, I can make a photo from the monitor next time I get to it. And yeah - I'm also looking forward to open that filter one...

What Happens When Oil Changes Are Ignored, Poor Care?

LOL - yes I'm aware that all this sounds like total heresy, but what can I say. If you think I'm making this up for some bizarre reason - there is nothing I can do.

Usually a no name supermarket 10w-40. Filter? I don't know, but the last time it was changed by a Ford dealership, so I guess Motorcraft. Frank

What Happens When Oil Changes Are Ignored, Poor Care?

Well, how many of you have actually driven a car over 100,000 miles without an oil or filter change, just topping off? I have (and still do). So I guess I'm one of the few guys here (maybe even the only one - who knows) with actual hands on - real world experience in this over several years...

What Happens When Oil Changes Are Ignored, Poor Care?

Well as long as you don't let her run out of oil (just topping it off when needed) pretty much nothing happens. Topping the oil off over the years is like a very slow, but steady oil change. I'm think no engine ever died., behause the oil was "too old" - more like from: "there was not enough oil...
