CRV 18k mi OCI, significant sludge buildup

7 miles round-trip to work and back. With occasional 250 mile highway trips every few months. Nothing unusual. Oh, on some (maybe about 1/3?) of those OCI's I did not change the oil filter, as per the manual suggestion.

CRV 18k mi OCI, significant sludge buildup

It would burn about 1 quart per OCI. Due to your experiment with VR&P, I currently have that in this car. It burned about 1/2 a quart in the first OCI, and NONE in it's current OCI (which has about 5000 miles). So, perhaps the rings were a bit dirty? Don't know...but I've been watching it...

CRV 18k mi OCI, significant sludge buildup

2014 Honda K24, with oil changed at 10-15% life remaining according to the MM. Here's what it looked like under the valve cover at 122,418 miles.

Oil experts, please share your knowledge.

You answered it here: "the oil viscosity doesn’t matter as much as the oil spec. In other words, if the motor calls for, for example, an API SP oil (not sure what it was back then, SH or SJ maybe?) then any API SP oil (or whatever API spec the engine called for) will be fine for that motor...

Good tech support from Nulon, a Fuches company Stage 3.5 BMW B48

The B48 in my Mini Countryman JCW is just over 300 HP. It's an amazing little engine that is set up anywhere from 189 to 300+ from the factory...depending upon the model. I don't know if that is at the crank or at the wheel. Since the 300+ HP version has upgraded components (forged rods for...

New Lower Price for M1 0W-30 ESP

The ESP Ow30 has a higher HTHS value than the 5w30. So you aren't helping yourself in the summer by moving to this particular 5w30. Maybe some other 5w30's have a higher HTHS than the ESP Ow30? Perhaps 0w40 fits your needs better. And, if you use an oil heater in the coldest temps, maybe you...

New Lower Price for M1 0W-30 ESP

Stick with 0w30 ESP...it's claimed by many to be a bit better base oil than the 5w30, and therefore ESP has a bit higher HTHS value. As far as winter goes, there's nearly no difference between a 0wxx and a 5wxx.

New Lower Price for M1 0W-30 ESP

Yes. Same here. I got 12.00 Walmart bucks for three jugs at 27.97 each for 0w30 ESP.

New Lower Price for M1 0W-30 ESP

Wow! It significantly quietened the startup clatter in a 2024 Forester to my ears. I used to cringe every cold-start of that noisy engine. Interesting that engines can seem to be so different.

    My MPG on 0w20

Of course not. This is mostly a forum of people discussing their anecdotes and opinions. Not a lot of science going on here. DOUBLE-Blinded, significantly powered, well designed studies are far from the reality of following the Scientific Method. Yet, some people choose anecdotes/beliefs over...

    My MPG on 0w20

Even the "recorded standard" varies. One of the jobs I had as teenager was to fill up a 5 gallon container once a shift to make sure the pump was delivering the 5 gallons...plus or minus a variation. It wasn't usually exactly 5 gallons...and some of that may have been due to temperature. By the...

    My MPG on 0w20

"Chaotic" definition in mathematics: having outcomes that can vary widely due to extremely small changes in initial conditions. Yep, an MPG value is chaotic when not done under very controlled conditions. I didn't mention variations of tank fill, variations in temperature of the fuel when...

    oil filter tightness question

I think ONE of the reasons a hand-tightened filter may need a tool to loosen is: Temperature at time of removal is warmer than Temp at time of installation. I think MOST do-it-yourselfers change oil when the engine is at least warm, if not hot. That flexible gasket probably swells a bit due to...

I do the same with copper washers. But, I heat them over a flame enough that any grooves/edges are removed. Never had one leak...don't know if that extra heating step is even needed.

    Valvoline Restore & Protect

I assume that blue coating is the same as I have on some Toyota washers...it appears to be some sort of a fabric that is stuck to the metal washer. It wouldn't surprise me if it is glued on with something. On a Camry I used to have, a couple of times that blue material would separate from the...
