Stinky Used Oil - 2011 Hyundai Oil Change

It's OK. You couldn't have known the situation. I'm not going to let it make me crazy, but it bothers me enough that a nagging voice in my head wants me to clean it up some. At least by changing oil early for one OCI. Ideally I'd like to change it again at 500 miles, then every 3500 miles...

Viscosity: Engine protection Vs. enhanced mileage

What if you are a DIY oil changer? Are they going to ask for your Walmart or NAPA receipts? Carfax won't know what you purchased at Walmart, Amazon, or autostores. In any case, they won't be able to prove that going from Xw20 to 5w30 caused a problem because it won't. Up one grade isn't going...

Viscosity: Engine protection Vs. enhanced mileage

Agreed. Plus the dealership will not know if you go up only one grade. Even a UOA (probably) wouldn't detect that because when they do a UOA on a Xw30 grade oil, it will (probably) be sheared or diluted down to being like Xw20 VOA. Also, would the dealer even care if they knew you went up one...

Stinky Used Oil - 2011 Hyundai Oil Change

She's not knowledgable about car maintenance, but she's a good neighbor who helps me in many ways. I'm severely handicapped. So I often need help. She's worth the help I provide her, but I'm going to limit it to minimum necessary/adequate car maintenance, which is more than her car would get...

Viscosity: Engine protection Vs. enhanced mileage

Exactly. That's why I said using a 30 in a car that calls for 20 is probably undetectable in a UOA. I don't know why he gave me a laughy face emoji for saying that. 🤷‍♂️

Super tech full synthetic HM versus Mobil1 HM 5w-30

OK. 10.9 is a respectable starting viscosity for a Xw30.

Viscosity: Engine protection Vs. enhanced mileage

I agree that they could tell, if you were using 40 in a vehicle that called for 20. I'd never do that though. I could understanding if the dealership didn't like that. What I would do is run 30 in a vehicle that called for 20. Would a UOA detect that? Maybe, maybe not. It would probably be a...

    Does brand of ATF matter?

I did look into Maxlife ATF a while ago. IIRC it's a syn blend with extra seal conditioners. I think it's OK for lubricating, but not the best. I think it's good for slowing, stopping, or preventing leaks. However, I have no trans leaks and my trans output shafts' seals were recently replaced...

Stinky Used Oil - 2011 Hyundai Oil Change

I've noticed at BITOG there are folks who want to do the best possible maintenance to the extreme, even to the point diminishing returns on investment. Then you've got folks who want to do adequate maintenance for lowest possible cost. I'm in between those for my car. For her car, I'm going for...

Stinky Used Oil - 2011 Hyundai Oil Change

She's defineately too cheap combined with ignorance of car maintenance. She already thinks I'm OCD because I want to change her oil again in June 2026, which will be 1 year and around 3500 miles. This makes me wonder what her OCI has been. I'm guessing 3+ years. Maybe 4 or 5 years. 😳🥺😮‍💨 Her...

What is considered a respectable HTHS?

That is excellent and would be very helpful info if I wanted a 5w40. Do you know the HTHS for: Quaker State Euro Full Syn 5w30 Quaker State Ultimate Protection Full Syn 5w30 Knowing those would be very interesting and possibly useful to me.

Viscosity: Engine protection Vs. enhanced mileage

What are the chances that a dealership would do that? It seems very unlikely to me.

    Does brand of ATF matter?

Speaking of Honda ATF... According to a CR-V forum I joined... Idemitsu makes Honda branded oils. So if a person wants to use Honda PSF or ATF, it's made by Idemitsu. The same oil can be purchased in Idemitsu branded bottles much cheaper than Honda branded bottles. It's the same oil. Idemitsu...

    Does brand of ATF matter?

Valvoline offers HM ATF & EP ATF choices. I was wondering what those offer that regular ATF does not, if anything.

Viscosity: Engine protection Vs. enhanced mileage

How would the dealer know what grade/viscosity oil was used? I've asked that question before. No one has ever answered it. Am I missing something?

Is a VOA a necessity before doing UOA?

Can I know oil condition from a UOA if I didn't do a UOA earlier? i.e. - Is a VOA a neccesity before beginning to do UOA?

    Does brand of ATF matter?

In regard to my 1997 Buick Park Ave and my neighbor's 2011 Hyundai Elantra... I don't know much about ATF and I'd like to know more. Does brand of ATF matter? Is all ATF synthetic these days? Are high mileage or extended protection ATF better or different than regular ATF? If so, how?

Stinky Used Oil - 2011 Hyundai Oil Change

I'm slightly a thickie, but only in a conservative way. I'm planning to step up the Hyundai from an unknown brand of 5w20 to a thick (for American oil) 5w30. I think that will be a good, yet conservative, increase in viscosity.

Viscosity: Engine protection Vs. enhanced mileage

Wow. The OP asked a relatively simple question. In response he hears about Stribeck curve, etc, debates and science ad nauseum that continues even after people know it's his first post. 🙄. To be realistic, how many people quoting detailed science or petroleum engineering charts and details ad...
