How much difference does oil really make?

Agreed. However, I know for a fact that people who buy the cheapest oil they can find are often (not always) people who don't care much about their car. Those are usually the same people who buy the cheapest oil filter they can. They also buy the cheapest air filter, if they ever replace their...

How much difference does oil really make?

Probably not much difference over life of vehicle a suitable grade (viscosity) with proper certication oil is used for the vehicle. However, that's assuming no adverse conditions happen. i.e. - any brand is fine if it's properly certified oil that's proper grade/viscosity oil and changed at...

I think 15w-40 in my jeep was a mistake

To OP. Compare the data sheets for 15w40, 10w40, 5w40, 10w30, & 5w30. Compare the KV100 cSt and KV40 cSt of each. Let us know how comparable the KV100 cSt is for those 5 grades. We already know they're not comparable at KV40, but I think you'll see they differ considerably at KV100.

I think 15w-40 in my jeep was a mistake

If your cold starts are 90F then yes it's fine. At least during the daytime. I don't know how cold your nights are. You might need to do a cold start at night or early morning sometimes. I wouldn't worry about cold starts that are 70F or higher. Probably somewhat colder would be fine too.

I think 15w-40 in my jeep was a mistake

In a diesel truck maybe. Are those 15w40 charts for a Jeep 4L gas engine? A Jeep 4L isn't a Harley engine. So who's moving the goal post? I'm talking about Jeep 4L specifically, which the topic of this thread. You're invoking other engines.

I think 15w-40 in my jeep was a mistake

I think you're reading or interpreting it wrong. In any case, your owners manual oil recommendations are decades obsolete. 5w30 oils have gotten much better. You could run a modern 5w30 syn year round just fine, especially if it's a 5w30 that is on the thick end of 30 grade. Examples: Quaker...

I think 15w-40 in my jeep was a mistake

A Jeep 4L isn't a diesel engine. If you want a thicker oil for it then use a thick per grade 5w30 syn or a 5w40 syn. I belonged to a Jeep club. We did offroading. 5w40 syn and thick for the grade 5w30 syn were commonly used in Jeep 4L and 4.6L strokers with good success in a wide variety of...

What PS Fluid do you use?

In addition to the PSF brands listed in OP, here are a few more to consider for my 97 Buick Park Ave. I haven't yet figured out which are group 3 or 4 synthetics. I don't want to get a group 2 conventional PSF. I want something good. Triax Pennzoil Shell Mobil 1 Havoline Supertech Mac

What PS Fluid do you use?

To clarify what I said in OP... I changed my Buick from the original AC Delco PSF to Lucas PSF at 14 years and 60K or 65K miles on car. Now the car has 105K miles and another 14 years has passed since I put Lucas PSF in. So the Lucas now has 45K miles and 14 years on it. It's still working...

Oil for slightly neglected ford explorer 4L sohc

I suggest staying within the bypass psi range of a stock filter. Maybe that's what you are doing. I find your post somehat confusing. Regarding your 22 psid statement I might not understand you. In any case, best wishes for your project.

What PS Fluid do you use?

Which is your favorite? Why is it your favorite? Personally I'm using Lucas PSF in my 97 Buick Park Ave because a Power Steering Sports specialist/tech/mechanic recommended it to me years ago. He actually recommended Swepco PSF, but no stores in town sell Swepco in my town. His 2nd...

Oil for slightly neglected ford explorer 4L sohc

Just make sure the longer filter has same bypass valve pressure differential rating. The bypass valve psi needs to be same for it to be compatible. At least that's my understanding. I always used a longer filter in my Jeep 4L and Buick 3800 II

    Castrol vs Valvoline

I don't like the Castrol GTX family. I like the Castrol Edge family. I like the Valvoline family in general, but especially their Maxlife & EP familiies. I like the Quaker State family. I like the Shell Rotella Multi Vehicle family. That said, all of this thread is splitting irrelevant hairs...

    Castrol vs Valvoline

Castrol Edge (not GTX) and Valvoline EP are both excellent IMO. The Valvoline is thicker (higher viscosity) if comparing same grade oils. For example 5w30 Edge is thinner than 5w30 V EP. 10w30 Edge is slightly thicker than 5w30 V EP. I think this trend also trend applies to other grades as...

Oil for slightly neglected ford explorer 4L sohc

It does take a while. That looks gritty. I suggest you join an Explorer Sport Trac forum and Ranger forum because they're likely to know of 1 or 2 longer filters that are compatible with 2010 Sport Trac. If you're lucky, you might have a couple of upgrade size choices, such as a ⅓ longer choice...

Oil for slightly neglected ford explorer 4L sohc

If new oil already looks distressed at 500 miles, that tells me it's loosened up a bunch of sludge left from prior oil that was left in too long. So just once change it at 1K to 3K. After that 5000K would be more than often enough. If it was me, I'd go 7.5K with an extended fill oil and ext fill...

Oil for slightly neglected ford explorer 4L sohc

Whatever oil you choose, I suggest change oil and filter, then change again 3K miles later (to clean out sludge that might still remain from the prior/neglected oil). After that 7.5K OCI. I recommend NAPA Gold filter. My 2nd choice would be Oreilly Microgard Select filter. Gold is NAPA's...

Never Change Oil - Delvac Challenge

I'm semi retired and work from home. I have my groceries delivered. My car is only used to go to dental and medical appointments. My cousin, neighbor, and caregiver take turns driving me in my car to appointments. When I go out in my neighborhood I drive my mobility scooter (when it's not...

Never Change Oil - Delvac Challenge

I don't know. I think the Popular Mechanics articles was publish in April 2025. The Troy Built mower in their test was a 2008 model. So I assume that means their mower test was done from 2008-18. The article covers more than just the mower extended time OCI test. It also covers the same topic...
