Why a clutch pedal stiffens as the disk wears. -answered.

I wanted to answer this because after reading many many many articles and forum posts why a pedal gets stiff, I finally found a satisfying answer. Forum posters said it was hydraulics, dirt contamination, pedal adjustments, or worn out bearings. None of that made sense because I had no leaks...

I Had a Mid, Mid Life Crisis

I seem to have an endless mid life crisis if financial spendings are any indicator. Can’t stop spending money on hobbies and tools. 🤦‍♂️ I hope you’re better off than me.

Failed transmission removal. What did I miss?

Clutch disk wear inspection pictures. By the looks of it, if I ran it much longer, the rivets may have scraped into the flywheel. Hopefully this is the reason the pedal was so stiff. I’m debating if I want to resurface the flywheel or not. There’s no ridges or indications of scraping. And there...

My Random Thoughts on Keeping a Car Running for a while

I’m thinking of adding an engine block heater. The kinds that go into the freeze plugs. I’m convinced it will reduce wear after watching FreedomWorx’s video on start up wear using prefilled vs dry oil filters. He cited a study that explain the cold start wear isn’t from sub-optimal tolerances...

Failed transmission removal. What did I miss?

Thanks for this article. I think the photo below clearly shows what’s going on. A thinned out clutch disk means the pressure plate fingers stick out more, meaning more deflection is needed to disengage it. Maybe my clutch disk is worn out? It is the original clutch on 180k miles after all.

Failed transmission removal. What did I miss?

For some perspective, I used a bathroom scale to get a rough estimate of clutch pedal forces. First picture shows what the scale reads at 25lbs. Second picture shows the highest force reading I got pushing the pedal slowly. If I push the pedal quickly, I get higher peak forces, which makes...

Failed transmission removal. What did I miss?

I test drove an identical Scion with 70k less miles than mine. The clutch was noticeably lighter. Toyota clutches are not supposed to be stiff. I theorize that the pressure plate has gotten stiffer as it ages also, like cold working metal. It’s a theory, but I may be wrong. Once I bolt the...

Failed transmission removal. What did I miss?

Throw out bearing does not look great. It’s rusty. But no noise when turning it. It’s a little crusty when turning, but not bad for 180k miles.

Failed transmission removal. What did I miss?

I’m convinced it is not either of the cylinders. They don’t leak, don’t have any delayed extension from a pedal stroke, and have consistently been the same stiffness since I bought the car last year. Pressure plate springs are the most likely reason for a consistent high reactionary force...

Failed transmission removal. What did I miss?

After another 3 hours I got it off! The slave cylinder trick helped! It broke loose some corrosion just enough to help the prying move the transmission. It took an hour of prying and wiggling, but it’s out! Now for the juicy details. Look at that date code! Why on Earth is the pressure...

Failed transmission removal. What did I miss?

Yep. All seven. Including starter. I’m going to try this trick. May as well put my stiff clutch to good use. I’ll have hard mount points disconnected from the slave cylinder. I’ll try this when I get home tonight.

Pretty certain. I went all around with my phone camera to check any hard to see areas.

Failed transmission removal. What did I miss?

I’m trying to get to the clutch on my Scion xD. The thing is so stiff, it ruined my leg. I was hoping to replace it and see if the pedal got lighter. I tried for hours to get the transmission to separate from the engine. It would not budge. I didn’t see any spot on the top of the engine to...

Rant: Accident right after replacing parts

Not identical, but similar sentiment. I had a Solara that I highly valued. It was a 5 speed V6, a rare combination. An excellent driving dynamic. I replaced the timing belt and suspension components, and engine mounts. The car drove like luxury: quiet, smooth, and clean. A moron turned left in...
