M1 Volatility - multiple vis products

Was the varnish entirely from prior to using QS 5W-40 or was it added to by QS? Check for Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W-40 on that online commerce site named after a tropical forest and river. I think it’s the same formulation as QS Euro 5W-40. I ordered multiple 6-qt cases for a decent price a...

M1 Volatility - multiple vis products

I have tested VRP quite a few times. I tried various ways to test its cleaning capabilities but the varnish I produced on purpose for it to clean was too hardened for it to do any significant cleaning. I made multiple attempts and failed but have succeeded year ago. The varnish was so hard...

I just checked Quaker State’s website. QS Ultimate Protection is still there. Recently at a nearby Walmart, there was none. Hopefully that is temporary. QS’s website still has no Euro 5W-40. For those that haven’t seen my thread on QS Ultimate Protection, the 5W-20’s volatility was only...

What I have chosen for my vehicle over the years, including now, is not useful information to others, but I will state the oils that I currently think especially highly of. 1. For oils with HTHS < 3.5: The possibly extinct QS Ultimate Protection for its low volatility and great oxidation...

M1 Volatility - multiple vis products

I don’t know how relevant and misleading the amount of varnish is on the sides of the cups. Oils can climb metal walls and an oil that does so more than others will form more varnish in tests like this, if all else is equal about the oils. I will report on the varnish anyway. M1 FS 0W-40...

Urban Legend from decades ago ... synthetic oil was "too slick" for engines

I don’t know if issues happened in engines that were related to this, but there are indeed significantly different traction coefficients for different base oil types. Additives also matter, of course. Read this: https://www.mdpi.com/2075-4442/6/3/73 It compares Group 3 to PAO, which are...

M1 Volatility - multiple vis products

The testing stopped after 16 hours of heating time. I tilted the cups, sucked out excess oil, then used a little piece of paper towel in each cup to suck up a little more oil. The piece in the M1 0W-40 cup fell over, landing on some big agglomerations (“blobs”) and not letting go of them...

M1 Volatility - multiple vis products

This shipment will be the first time I’ve had it. My curiosity will likely get the best of me and cause me to test it alongside QS 5W-40. I first have to test some other oils for a member who sent them.

M1 Volatility - multiple vis products

Around a month ago, when I learned how difficult or impossible it became to get QS 5W-40 for a good price, I was quite upset. BornSlippy is right that Pennzoil Platinum 5W-40 is the same formulation. I just bought that PP for a decent, but not great, price at the big online seller named after...

M1 Volatility - multiple vis products

You’re welcome. I figured that at least one person would be disappointed and that is the least pleasant part about posting the results. However, it is better to be informed about the data than not. Quaker State 5W-40 and Ultimate Protection perform exceptionally well in volatility and...

M1 Volatility - multiple vis products

What has happened to this thread with the discussion barely related to the thread’s topic? Below are the pictures of the agglomerations of the oxidation products. While the three M1 oils have different numbers of agglomerations, their total volume appears similar. QS has only one small one...

I’m sorry, cookand! 😄 It’s not over yet, since the oxidation portion of the test has been going on much of today. Soon coming up on 11.75 hours of total heating. Typically oils really take a dramatic turn for the worse around 12 hours. Today I increased the temp. to 425 and moved the cups...

M1 Volatility - multiple vis products

Noack estimates at 2.75 hours are below. It relies on assuming that QS 5W-40's Noack value is 5.7%. M1 ESP 0W-30: 7.8% M1 FS 0W-40: 9.0% M1 ESP 5W-30: 9.4% Noack tests give only one number, a snapshot in time. Seeing multiple measurements over time gives a more complete picture. It...

No. I would love to have some very expensive oil bench testing equipment but no way am I going to spend the big money for that or turn part of my house into a laboratory. Haha.

M1 FS 0W-40, M1 ESP 0W-30, M1 5W-30 ESP Volatility Results - May 2025 The test was conducted on May 24, 2025. These oils were sent them to me by two BITOG members. I still have some more oils to test that were sent by one of the members. As always, 1.000 grams of oil were used for each oil...

2016 Subaru STi 41k mi; Castrol Euro 0w-40 3.3k mi

How long ago did you buy that oil? I expected to see much lower calcium and more magnesium to help prevent LSPI. Here is a VOA: https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/castrol-edge-0w-40-sp-voa.384239/#post-6925401

It barely meets MB 229.5, if that is close to correct.

My four favorite, non-HDEO, non-boutique motor oils

M1 5W-40 FS is moderately less volatile than 0W-40, even though their KV100’s are 13.2 and 13.8 cst, respectively. The 0W-40’s advantage is in extreme cold. I would pass on both of them though, in favor of some of the competition.

Oil for 170,000+ mile 2009 Honda Fit Sport

If VRP helps the oil loss considerably, I suggest using it perpetually. If it does, it indicates the piston rings got cleaned. Switching away from what does good work to a lower quality oil is not the best choice, in my opinion.
