G100UL fuel: O-ring, seal, paint problems?

Yeah, GAMI got an STC for approval in almost all spark-ignition engines with the G100UL. One of the exceptions that doesn't apparently have STC approval is talked about in the video; the PPponk aka Northpoint XP470 conversion engine, which is a popular upgrade to TCM O-470/520 powered...

Ford 10R60 - HPL ATF vs OEM ULV

I went ahead and just did the Motorcraft Mercon ULV from rockauto which was half the price of the dealer and allowed me to save $3 per quart even with shipping. With the amount of fluid needed for a triple fluid exchange on two vehicles like I plan that’ll save me $100 or so compared to dealer...

    Champion Aerospace CH48108-1 C&P

I changed the oil too, with Aeroshell W15W-50. Generally every 25 hours I change oil and filter.

    Champion Aerospace CH48108-1 C&P

I’m not sure if the low efficiency is an intentional part of the design compromise or a product of old design/limited market/regulatory requirements. Some owners of experimental/amateur built (EAB) airplanes like mine have started using automotive filters if they fit. There are really only two...

    Champion Aerospace CH48108-1 C&P

Again new to this so let me in on any feedback. This was run on a Lycoming IO-360 Airplane Engine for 25 hours. These filters tested 99% at 40 microns as discussed here. Flashlight Test Measured can thickness at 0.7mm. 8 hole endcap and 2 piece anti-drain back valve? Metal Core with...

Heated Garages in Cold Climates and Mitigating Corrosion?

It was definitely greasy for a few months after I got it in November and would leave goo on anything that touched it for about 3-4 months but not so much after 6. I think it is asphalt based. No idea if it is actually any good. The undercoat is VG-160 described here as wax based:

Heated Garages in Cold Climates and Mitigating Corrosion?

Maybe, not sure the logistics of all that up here but I was surprised at the limited options for undecoat. I did the Valu-gard on one of my Broncos. It was $500. It seems to be be holding up a little bit better than the one without it, so maybe I will have the other one done too, plus look...

Heated Garages in Cold Climates and Mitigating Corrosion?

It's a first floor garage and the living area of the house is on the second floor. There are no living areas on the first floor with the garage, but there is an adjacent 1000 sq ft airplane hangar behind a wall that shares the radiant floor system. The radiant heat is filled with water. I can...

Fram Synthetic Endurance FE3387A C&P w/ Flashlight Test

First time doing one of these on BITOG so I'm open to any criticisms or feedback. I only ran this filter for about an hour on a Kohler 38RCL 38kW natural gas standby generator with HPL Premium Plus PCMO 0W-30. I didn’t trust it after all the bypass leak reports on here and wanted to do a...

G100UL fuel: O-ring, seal, paint problems?

Wow, thanks for the detailed tech info. I'm using dual electronic ignition (lightspeed) on my Lyc. IO-360 which is touted to be a stronger spark, I wonder if it would suffice for the Swift.

Heated Garages in Cold Climates and Mitigating Corrosion?

Hello, Where I live the average winter low isn't too cold, 10F or so, but the roads are treated with a lot of gravel, sand, and sometimes chemicals (urea, I think, so not as bad as what some other states use?). For the last decade or so I was driving older cars and they lived outside, I...

G100UL fuel: O-ring, seal, paint problems?

I thought this video had some good overlap with the chemistry themes of BITOG. Apparently the forced early adopters of the new unleaded 100 octane G100UL fuel for piston powered airplanes in California are having issues with paint, o-rings, and potentially seals inside of fuel tanks. This is...

Valvoline Restore & Protect 5W-30 VOA

Great question for the chemists & scientists that we are fortunate to have participate on this website, but I don't know! It could be that there is a chemical in VRP that is also present in fuel (and therefore shows up on a gas chromatograph), or it could be due to laboratory/testing issues...

    Aeroshell W15W-50 VOA

Very nice! They are imperfecct machines, and I wonder if we are deluding ourselves by thinking some operating trick or maintenance product can overcome that, but it still probably won't stop me from trying (after the seed gets planted about some new strategy by a mechanic, usually). To answer...

    Aeroshell W15W-50 VOA

Interesting, how much time since new or overhaul on your Lyc IO-360? Mine is at 530/3 yrs snew and only uses about 1 qt per 20 hours, but I suspect some sticky exhaust valves are causing coughing/chugging on cold starts. Had to replace a fuel tank due to a leak on a metal fold which ended up...

    Aeroshell W15W-50 VOA

Sorry for putting the additive in, I thought it would be good to know about. Here is one of just the Aeroshell W15W-50 with no additives afaik from Speediagnostix’s website, although it’s a different lab, different year/batch etc:

    Aeroshell W15W-50 VOA

This is my source of that PAO claim, I don’t know if it is reliable; this formulation predates (or coincides with the early days of) the common use of group III I think? Thus, the additive. I don’t think its formulation has changed much since ~30? years ago when it first came out...

Ford 10R60 - HPL ATF vs OEM ULV

The 2025 broncos with the 2.3L do come with MPI and DI which is nice. 2.3 Mustangs got that last year and Explorers are also getting it this year, reportedly. Not sure about the Rangers. New 2.3L Ecoboost
