    Lube the lugs?

I have seen too many lug nuts which would have been impossible to remove on the side of the road because they were installed dry and seized. AS others have said reduce the torque when tightening to compensate for the lubricant. I always use a torque wrench and have never had one loosen nor have...

Smog Test cheats, How do they do it?

I have a 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor that had a couple ignition modules fail during a trip. This caused the cat to overheat which generated a code PO431 WARM UP CATALYST BELOW THRESHOLD. I found a link that said to add 1 gallon of lacquer thinner to half tank of gas (10 gallons +-) Needing a...

how long for new car break in?

I would use 5w30 rather than 5w20 for peace of mind.

Are Ester based Synthetics really better ?

I grew up next to a junk yard & spent we spent our days raising he#@ in there. I was very curious about engines and would take them apart to see what’s in there. I recall many times finding engines that were bottom side up exposed to the weather with the oil pan off that had water sitting in...

I have a catalytic converter question.

I have a catalytic converter question. I acquired a 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor with 180000 miles that had ignition issues (misfire) during a cross country trip prior to my purchase. Two ignition coils were replaced which resolved the skipping but the check engine light came on code (PO431) Warm Up...

Need to replace pads too or just rotors?

I agree with everything you said except the part about putting oil on the lug nuts as that may lead to over torguing the lug nuts. That's almost universally recommended against by manufacturers. And putting lubricant at the hub and rotor interface is not recommended by most, as that could...

Need to replace pads too or just rotors?

I neglected to answer the question of needing to replace pads with rotors. That depends on the condition of the pads and how particular you are. If the pads are smooth & worn evenly reuse the pads. I have installed new rotors & reused pads that were groved from the old rotor, they pulled to 1...

Need to replace pads too or just rotors?

Living in the rust belt this is my list of requirements for a good brake job. When replacing the rotor the hub must be absolutely clean of rust & foreign material. There is a cone shaped abrasive tool that goes in an electric drill or air tool to clean around the wheel studs removing rust &...

Why Not Use HDEO in Everything?

Being somewhat obsessed with lubricants & filters (aren’t we all) and reading all I can find on this topic my thoughts have changed from use HDEO in everything to using oils actually recommended & approved. The reason for my change of opinion is; Diesels are designed with much larger bearings...

    Gallon oil vs Bulk oil?

In the 80's & 90's I worked in engineering developing the Hydro mechanical Transmission used in the US Armies Bradley Fighting vehicle System. The heart of the Transmission consisted of two 21 cubic inch ball piston pumps. The transmission held 15 gallons of 15w40 oil. We purchased oil in 55...

    Husqvarna with a Kohler engine

I have a (2) Generac XL4000's (1) Chinese quiet diesel genset (1) 5kw yanmar (L90) generator and a 25kw pto generator for my tractor. I use M1 5-30 in the Generic’s and Rotella T6 5w40 in the diesels. I live in the N east and with temperatures that can range from -30 to 90+. I need an oil that...

DIY toe-in/out alignment, who's done it?

I have a small repair shop & no alignment machine. When I check tires for wear I run my hand across the tread to check toe-in, it should feel smooth sliding in & out. Improper toe-in adjustment causes the tire tread to scrub the road surface which makes the tread feel raised (feathered) in one...

Spray lube for a drive shaft carrier bearing?

I've used PB Blaster & WD40 to keep failing u-joints & noisy bearings happy many times. It's not a cure but many times it does free-up & quiet things down allowing me to plan the repair. I had a squeaking double cardian joint (cv joint) on my jeep's front driveshaft years ago & WD40 cured it...

Best over the counter spin-on bypass option?

The Dodge Cummins filter is 1-16 same as the Amsoil bypass. Wix #57136 is rated at 10 microns with no internal bypass for Cummins remote mount applications. I've been considering this myself.
