Financial graphic comparison of buying a new or used car

My most expensive cars to date have started with Jacque Plante's number (to stay in the same era). 😉 That is, I've bought three for $10K or more, but have never paid $20K.

Hit a deer can it be fixed?

Did you not like the truck before, or did you figure it could be properly repaired?

HFCS vs sucrose in soda is not really that different

This stat is very simplistic, as it ignores all sorts of confounding factors, but it went something like this: In 1940, Americans spent 15% of their income on food, and 5% on health care. By 2010, they spent 5% on food, and 15% on health care.

New car purchase with evidence of accident, concern?

I read somewhere that a vehicle should be considered depreciated by 25% of the cost of an accident repair. For example, a $10K repair would devalue the vehicle by $2500. I also read that some 20% of new vehicles are damaged during delivery. That sounds very high, but who knows?

End of life experience during my Dad's passing

My beloved sister-in-law Alison (my wife's sister) passed away May 19th. We heard on February 12th that her cancer had metasticized. My wife went down to California in late February to be with her, and stayed for several weeks. After she returned, our oldest son and I went down to say...

Retirement-Making sure Wife will be OK.

I keep meaning to make a "If (I) were out of the picture" (life-insurance sales-lady jargon from over 30 years ago) list for my wife. Thanks for the reminder!

    2023 Mazda CX-9 Sparkplugs

Who makes the factory plugs for Mazda? I would guess NGK or Denso. I wonder whether this is a case where there's a significant difference between the OE plugs and aftermarket replacements by the same manufacturer. There was a recent discussion here about a Euro engine (Mercedes?) which ran...

    Best/worst sealed wheel bearing brands

Coincidentally enough, I recently replaced a front wheel-bearing/hub assembly on a 2009 Kia Sedona. I bought a genuine Kia part, which came in a FAG box.

We visited Germany in 2018. Absolutely loved it. At the time I said that if I were a lot younger I would have considered moving there.

    Unusual misfire situation...

@jarring, welcome! It sounds like you've looked at all the obvious stuff, and done some good troubleshooting. This is a long shot, but I would roll the pushrods on a piece of glass. Clicking would indicate a bent pushrod. What engine? LS 5.3 or 6.0? I presume the intake and exhaust...

New Battery-powered Lawnmower - Misleading Marketing

Check out post #25. I have a small yard, and don't let the grass get too long, so the Kobalt is fine for me, but agree that it would be disappointing in many applications.

New Battery-powered Lawnmower - Misleading Marketing

I ran a battery-powered Toro for 15 years - 2009 to 2024. It had three conventional gel-cell batteries in series (c. 37 V) which had lots and lots of reserve, and never gave me any problems. Unfortunately, the electric motor was its Achilles heel; it was tall and cylindrical, and mounted such...

    Carmaker Nissan on borrowed time?

Good, perhaps I'll leave the one in our van (replaced 70,000 km ago) alone, and continue with my regular drain-and-fill regimen.

New Battery-powered Lawnmower - Misleading Marketing

Maybe - the grass would have to be fairly dry and not overgrown. In my opinion it's marginal. The owner finds it a big upgrade over his retired corded electric mower, even with having to recharge.

    Transmission drain and fill

@Drew99GT, good question, I've wondered the same. I suspect leaving it on ramps or jack stands, running the engine for a few minutes between drains-and-fills, and shifting through the gears, would be enough to circulate the fluid. That's my opinion only; I hope a transmission expert will...
