Well since you're not concerned with spec' oils, Motul 300V 5W-30 is an option.
What Red Line oil did...

go here
http://www.bmwusa.com/standard/content/owner/syntheticengineoils.aspx
the specific oils they recommend on their website are
Castrol Syntec European Formula SAE 0W-30
Mobil 1 SAE 0W-40
Pennzoil Platinum European Formula Ultra SAE 5W-30

I may have answered my own question.
On the Motul website they say the 8100 X-clean 5W30 meets the BMW LL-04 spec, but should only be used in European Union Countries. In the X-cess line they don't have a 5W30.
So my guess is that they recommend the 5W40 because they don't have anything else.
Both Red line and Motul are ester based (added?) oils, they claim that the Ester based oils adhere to metal parts better than other synthetics, is there any truth in that?

many of my trips are over 80 miles. (thats why i bought this car)
there were times when the sensor would go off for short periods of time. When it first started, it would go off after about 30mins. so I thought the oil was heating up and off gasing any moisture. but then after a while it would stay on no matter what. Right now i am running the bmw castrol oil...
i have a 2009 BMW 750Li. at 7500 miles i switched to red line oil, no problem, at 15000 I replaced the oil, and I got a fault from my oil level sensor, when the dealer put it on the computer it said there was moisture in my oil. dealer assumed it was a bad sensor, replaced it twice. finally he...
