Loctite 518 and gear oil in transmission- issues?

. I know this doesn't require a response- it's all good advice after all. I know these general rules of thumb. My original question, which I'd still love to get an answer to, is what happens to this stuff inside a transmission. I'm sure it either just disperses or at least remains very soft...

Loctite 518 and gear oil in transmission- issues?

In fact I asked NAPA yesterday if they could still get any GL4 and he looked it up... found that same Pennzoil GL4 in the system, which is the only GL4 product he could find. He said there was 1 quart of it in Canada. :ROFLMAO: I'd be fine with that too, but he couldn't say whether they'd ever...

Loctite 518 and gear oil in transmission- issues?

I guess I should specify that my main concerns are that somehow this stuff becomes hard/crystalline enough (like red threadlocker) that it might damage bearings, or gooey enough to clog the oiling holes in the mainshaft gears (which would stick there during a drain/refill anyway). Or, I suppose...

Loctite 518 and gear oil in transmission- issues?

That was my initial thought too- however, at $30 a quart for gear oil (it wants GL4 oil which is unobtanium in this part of Canada) I was starting to wonder if I could get away without. :) The only thing that was replaced in it was bearings, so there's nothing that should be shedding any metal...

Loctite 518 and gear oil in transmission- issues?

This is what's recommended. There's just no info that I can find about what happens when this stuff mixes with oil. Some people use RTV, but the experts don't recommend it as that actually does cure and bits can break off and plug oil holes.

Loctite 518 and gear oil in transmission- issues?

Can anyone tell me what the chemistry and/or other practical issues are in using Loctite 518 anaerobic sealant in a manual trans rebuild? This is to seal the aluminum case flanges to a central steel mounting plate (machined surfaces). Since whatever (hopefully minimal) amount that squeezes out...

Engine assembly lube on manual trans build

Thanks, didn't know about the moly, that's great to know. This is exactly why I was hesitant, I figured there were some potential chemistry issues. I'm guessing STP would be their engine oil treatment? Really like the idea of vaseline + gear oil, I'm going to experiment with that tomorrow. I...

Engine assembly lube on manual trans build

I'm not able to get any of the popular manual transmission assembly lubes around here, Assemblee Goo/Transjel etc. Can I use a common engine assembly lube, or am I better off going with the old standard of Vaseline? Or should I just focus on making sure everything's well soaked with gear oil as...

Opinions on Carquest (Canada) transmission filter quality?

I'm definitely not immune to overspending on my vehicles. I generally consider how critical the part is- or the part downstream it's protecting. This is why I've been a bit torn on how much thought to put into the trans filter deal. It seems the consensus is that it doesn't do much other than...

Opinions on Carquest (Canada) transmission filter quality?

Hi Kira, Thanks for the info and especially for the kind offer of the 4WD pan. In fact mine is a 2WD and I wouldn't mind upgrading it - just for curiosity's sake I'll take a look at postage and get back to you on that. Cheers! In my case, "high mileage" is 230,000 miles. :) I have a record of...

Opinions on Carquest (Canada) transmission filter quality?

edit: I also should have added that I don't really have any experience with Carquest in general as I've only had access to one for the last 6 months. I don't have a good sense for their parts quality in general. I've read mixed reviews. I probably should have said was "I just want to make sure...

Opinions on Carquest (Canada) transmission filter quality?

Anyone have any experience with Carquest (Canadian version) transmission filters? I asked who makes them and was told "probably Baldwin" but I wasn't able to find any info on that or on quality here or anywhere else. Ford quoted me $115 for the filter and gasket whereas the Carquest kit is...

Shelf life of Gumout fuel injector cleaner

Anyone out there happen to know what the shelf life of Gumout fuel injector cleaner (poorly stored in high temps) is likely to be? I was out of the country for 5 years and left this with a friend expecting he'd use it... he stuck it in his attic, which I expect was well into the 120F range for 5...

    03 Mazda Protege hits 200k

Yep, 200k miles is a nice milestone. We were trying to decide between that car and the 03 Corolla for my wife, and I steered her towards the Corolla (having owned several of them previously). In hindsight, it was a good decision, because as SLCraig points out, I haven't seen one up north in...
