I agree with BrocLuno. Pay attention to which oil the engine likes best. I had people tell me that the Ducati would blow up if I did not use the best group 4 or 5 synthetic. In reality, it really likes the Rotella 15W40 with frequent changes.
I'm going to propose something radical that worked for me. I had a high mileage Miata with the 6 speed box and VERY worn 2nd and 3rd synchros from a previous owner. I dumped the gear oil from the box and filled with a blend. 50% conventional Valvoline GL-4 75W-90 and 50% Redline Heavy...
This is a 97 Miata that we have owned from new. It is my wife's driver and sees 70% city use and short trips. The only unusual item here is that this is an 11 month sample to get to 4.5K. Oil filter is Denso 150-1011. I had a lifter tick (hydraulic adjusters) when cold with RTS (the previous...
Factory specified oil grade is 10W-30 in the factory service manual for the 2002 Miata. Factory specified oil pressure at 3K rpm is 50 PSI. Lifters are bucket solids. Bypass is above 60 PSI. I have run M1 10W-30 EP with no issues but it caused the variable intake valve advance mechanism (engine...
You are missing the point here guys! We are all bikers. We all deal with sharing the road with the cages. It does not matter what you ride, only that you do. The moped drivers deal with the same issues as the sport bike guys. Live Free, Ride Free!
Chrysler may be using bearings in the diff that have polyamide 6.6 cages. These polyamide bearing cages do not like synthetic lube, especially synthetic lubes with Phosphate esters. This has caused gearbox failures in the Moto Guzzi community by lowering the allowable operating temperature of...
Horsepower wars and emission regs leave no other choice. From an engineering perspective, this is a good thing. From an enthusiast's perspective, some of our motoring soul is dying.
I don't think the only holdout will be the Chinese. Harley will resist til they are forced.
Cooling fins give an...
My love affair with the Guzzi's started in the mid 1980's with a 1974 850 Eldorado - the only motorcycle I ever regret having sold. My current 2000 V11 Jackal is a jewel. Like any high performance Italian, it requires good mantainence and setup. A Power Commander to take care of the too lean...
Very funny JerryBob! It has 250,648 mi on it as of today. I have been using Denso oil filters as well as RTS or M1 0W-40 from the day I purchased it. I ran a UOA this time to get a baseline for the next run with Fuchs. So far the seat of the pants says the engine is smoother and quieter with the...
The 1997 Miata in my signature has 190K miles now and I owned that one from new. The mid first gen and second gen Miata's are very well built cars that can go 300K easy if properly serviced. Both of mine have original engine and transmissions. They use an iron block and aluminum heads. The block...
The variable camshaft engagement point is not smooth with the RTS when the engine is cold. The engagement point is not noticable with the M1 or the Fuchs. I still use Rotella in the bikes and the lawn equipment.
This is the first sample from my 02 Miata SE that I bought with 186,000 mi. on it. I had been running Rotella 5W-40 until the M1 fill that was sampled below. I re-filled with Fuchs Titan SuperSyn 5W-40 and will run a sample when it is change time.
Use is 70% highway. It handles like a go-cart...
I just received 20 L of Fuchs Titan SuperSyn 5W-40. It will be going into my Miata's. I met the new Florida distributor on an airplane. The price point was a bit higher than the M1 0W-40 that I have in the Miata's now.
