I bought an 85 K20 Suburban in 1994 at a GSA auction. It had 70,000 on it. Don't know what oil the Forest Service used but I put another 245,000 on it using Castrol conventional oil. Put in a new Goodwrench 350 a year ago and expect to get a heck of a lot of miles out of it. Using Castrol GTX now.

Been using Castrol GTX 10w30 for a year in my new a year ago Goodwrench 350 flat tappet engine. Had to get some front diff work on the Suburban yesterday and the topic of ZDDP came up and the mechanic said I had already ruined the engine by using Castrol GTX without adding a ZDDP supplement. So...
Considering this oil. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-MGSAE30/
I have a brand new 350 crate motor that has been on Castrol 10-30 since start up 10,000 miles ago. Is the extra ZDDP necessary for new flat tappet engines or just at break in.

I got 316,000 hard miles out of a 350 in a K20 Suburban changing the oil every 3000. The mechanic that installed my new engine in the Sub recommended the same thing considering where I live and work. 3000 miles with dino for me.

Nope.
Just change the oil and filter. I'd go a shorter OCI for the first one since there is going to be more metals and contamination in the...
The original engine in my '85 K20 Suburban lasted 316,000 miles with 3000 mile oil/filter changes. The new engine has 1,695 miles on it as of today, so I have 1,305 miles til the oil gets changed.
