    If CAFE/stringent fuel economy/emissions requirements didn't exist....would 0W-8/16/20 exist?

Question on the continuous required viscosity threads. The articles and Youtube video's I've seen by I assume experts, all say that oil shears and typically loses one grade if the required viscosity is 20 , wouldn't 30 become a 20 after a couple hundred miles? If it was ever tested after an...

    Toyota Camry Australian manual

Hello The U.S. Camry owners manual calls for 0w8 oil, with 0w16 ok if 8 is not available. The Australian manual for the same car allows for up to 10w30. I assume the difference is the CAFE standards. Is there any reason that the higher oil cannot be used n US cars? The engine model number is the...

    2024 Jetta Oil

the Vw manual doesn’t have a viscosity listing that I saw. There is a sticker under the hood though. Unlike Toyota, which specifically says to use a specific oil only, I don’t see the same with VW. To each their own.

Another is to think of oil molecules as small pillows. Would a pillow that is 50 percent thicker absorb shock more or less?

    2024 Jetta Oil

It’s funny you mention Toyota. I just sold my 2021 Camry. The US owners manual and under the hood said to only use 0w16 oil. The car owners manual in Australia allows up to 15w40. The engine part number is the same. A quick google and you can verify for yourself. I ran 5w30 and it ran much...

No. The auto Manufacturer‘s best interest is to find the best middle point between longevity, while meeting the environmental regulations. in addition, a customer who’s car lasts 150k miles will return to the show room a lot earlier than the one who’s car lasts 250k.

Never said anything about hydraulic lifter noise. I said the engine ran smoother. Everything from the cam to pistons etc are better lubricated. Simply reduces normal vibrations even further.

And when you have an engine issue later, the dealer will simply say it’s out of warranty,

This is where people simply understand. Engines are engineered to be able to accept lower oil, not the other way around. An engine designed to run on minimum 10w40 cannot use 0w20 without leaking or maintaining oil pressure.

No. Better lubrication results in smother operation and less friction between parts. This is where the drone/hum comes from. You will immediately feel and hear the difference. 10 weight difference doesn’t sound like much but it’s 50% higher than 20.

Won’t matter as long as it’s on the receipt.

FYI Today I visited a local VW service department to pick up a quart of 508 00 oil. The dipstick on my car is halfway down the hatch but I didn’t see it when new a week ago. Both managers behind the desk noted it was just 0w20 oil. They took my keys and had it topped off for free. Both were very...

0W-16 or 0W-20 for road trip?

I just traded in a Corolla Hatch that called for 0W16. If you got the RPM over 3k the engine let you know it. With a manual transmission you can feel it as well as hear it more than an Auto since there is no fluid buffer from a torque converter. Switching to 0W20 made a noticeable difference...
