eddie... its not that FRAM filters are the pits, they are good filters, people just dont think they are worth the price they charge for them. FRAM extraguard is a decent filter but they definately do get better as you move up the chain. I personally like the toughguard line, pretty much the same...

I also have a Mazda3 with the cartridge filter. I am currently only running a 5000 mile interval with a Wix filter. I dont see the problem in making the OCI longer. I was also looking into switching to the spin-on filter. But, wouldnt that void the warranty because we modified the oil system...

i would not be too concerned with the fact that you can move it. how far does is move up and down? if its just slightly, no big deal. if you can move it 1/4" then you might want to return it. center tubes are made a touch shorter to ensure that the media is seated into the glue on the end caps...

The FRAM HP filters are a racing oil filter. They are not made for effieciency but rather flow. They have a high flow rate which in returns lowers the efficiency. They do have a stronger body and are a very sturdy filter... but not worth it if you plan on using them in your everyday driver.

Im not sure what blend I will go with. Does anybody have any suggestions? Im really not even sure what is out there. I have used the Castrol blend in the past. Is this a good oil to use or not? Im open to anything.

Thanks everybody for the response. I think im going to stick with the current cartridge type filter and run a syn. blend for now. I will be using a Wix filter and probably a 4-4.5k OCI, until the warranty is up.

Most of my driving is highway. I have had the car for about 8 months and already have close to 17k on it. Im probably gonna end up right around about 24k a year, with I would say 80% highway and 20% city. Thanks!
