Spotted this mercury lynx in the Menards parking lot. Extremely clean, especially for Indiana, plus notice the diesel badge on the fender! It was a 4 or 5 speed manual as well.

I had a 1985 Ford Escort Pony 4-speed manual which was basically the same car with a different badge. I sold it in 1995. It was a massive POS, but it was my first car, so I remember it fondly.

I'd bet it was a grandparent who lived way out in the country who had this and passed away recently.
It's a quirky combo: 40 horsepower Diesel with a manual trans (which most kids these days don't even know how to operate) so it probably wasn't worth much if it were offered for sale.

I remember this and the Tempo AWD as being some of the slowest cars you could find at the time.

That lynx looks repainted and I love how they put the pinstripe back on. It's Bill Dautreve's car from KOTH:

This might be sad to the rest of the world but this generation Civic is rare here now due to rust. I saw this specimen at a car show and thought of One Eyed-
Jack.

I've seen a Lynx at work a few times back in 2014 and 2015. Haven't seen it since I moved to another building, however. Appeared to be in pretty good shape, too. Also saw one of the 1st gen Escorts not too long ago, but that one was rusty and loud as can be.

Our rural mail lady drove a Diesel Escort for many years, delivering mail.

My Sister had an '84 Chevy Chevette (automatic!) with a 1.8 Isuzu diesel.

0-60 mph was about 47 seconds.

Slow? How about a first year Ford EXP automatic? Just made more noise when it downshifted. The gas pedal truly was an on/off switch.

30 seconds to 60mph. (this is not the diesel model, but seems impressively underpowered)

LOL! I had a 1985 Ford EXP. It was my first "decent" car! I bought it off my sister in 1989. It had a 5spd manual and 1.8L engine IIRC. It had bad rust around the hatch by the time it was ~3yrs/old. The cylinder head cracked on it and needed to be replaced and the water pump locked up on me once, shredding all the teeth of the timing belt. New WP and belt and it lived on for a little while longer. It was actually pretty peppy and fun to drive with the 5spd. Interior was really nice for the timeframe as well.

The first year was 1982 and had a 1.6 litre motor with 70 hp. You had the nicer one.
