If that engine has VVT it probably has moved the cam(s) for cold start.
Makes the engine far more responsive low in the rpm range when cold, then it will retard them as the revs come up as it warms...

Small missfires are also used by some manufacturers as a way to warm up the cat. converters quicker, as it send some raw fuel down the exhaust.
