We just started playing around with 2 cycle karts. I was shocked to find that the Yamaha KT100 engine calls for 20:1 oil ratio; and many people run 16:1

im guessing the engine runs a few rpm? oil ratio is pretty much a direct result of rpm an engine is mostly run at. thats why 40:1 works well overall, but road racers like a kart or bike can run 20:1 and run cleanly that way.

They run the engine on a dyno and measure the horsepower at the intended RPM range and set the oil for peak power. Often peak power will occur at ratios below 20 to one. Some old engines in the days of castor oil 10% oil was used, and it worked well. Even after allowing for the fuel displaced from all the oil, they made more power. Burned Castor oil is a birch to scrap off the piston and out of the port. With a lot of use it would affect the chamber, and you would have to use oven cleaner to the clean it. Lots of oven cleaner.

16 to 1, 20 to 1 and 24 to 1 are common Kart mixtures. Kart engines are tuned for maximum output, and operated under high load for long periods of time. Plus, as mentioned above, nearly all 2 stroke engines make more HP with more oil.

We ran outboard racing engines at 16 to 1, to get more power. Which we did, rather successfully too.
