Not sure if this has been posted before... Certainly an interesting concept, being a fan of the older 2-stroke stuff, I await to see what this engine might be like, or the potential application.

What would be even more interesting are modern "opposed-cylinder" designs that resemble the old Napier-Deltic. Somehow, I suspect fuel use and emissions will restrict such development...

There is no denying however, that the two-stroke engine is very efficient at making more power.

4 cylinders, 8 pistons.

Sounds like the old Commer "Knocker" engine...allegedly based on a WWII Junkers JUMO...then there's the Deltic.

None of them are much like the Renault concept.

There used to be 3 cylinder 6 piston truck engines in Europe a while back. Same thing, opposed cylinders.

My uncle was in the navy during world war two and worked on two stroke diesels. He said the navy had lots of them powering their ships. They could run either direction so didn't need a transmission to reverse them. And they started with compresses air. I took a ferry across lake Champlain back in the 90's. IIRC the ferry was a converted WW2 landing craft and still was powered by one of these two stroke diesels.

Another engine with good prospects and backing is the compression ignition gas engine. Thats right, a gas engine that's a diesel or is it a diesel that's a gas engine?

The Detroit Deisels were two stroke. I drove alot of them. If you lugged the motor down too far it would run backwards. Blowing smoke out the air cleaner. Not healthy. The owners manual in a 1974 Brockway for the 318 Detroit actually said don't be alarmed by the sound of your engine, it is a two stroke and should not be babied. It was run in on a dyno and ready to work. I got a charge out of the babied. You down shifted at about 2000 rpm on hills. Always screaming. Only made power between 2000 and 2300 rpm. Fun to drive in a bad mood.

There was one of the engines that lived on still being made until a year or two ago for the US armed forces. Used in a STRYKER I believe.
