Some of them had grease instead of oil. All of them eventually leaked.

Most modern equipment (that I'm aware of) no longer has gears, but is direct-driven by servomotors instead. Servos are WAY better, as there's no gear-lash (much more precise), and no need for all that messy lube.
 
That happens to be old, but there is lots of new stuff designed the same. They originally used Asphalt based oils, sometimes greases. This is a heavy polybutene gear oil, no leaking, less pitting, less temperature, little mess. Have to put a lot of pressure on sugar cane.

Of course it would not be good to put a hand in. I just went for a camera and a strobe light.
