I am thinking of putting Zoysia grass from plugs on my lawn. Has anyone done this? what were the results? Do you need to water it alot till established? Which company did you buy plugs from?

My great aunt used to have zoysia, the thing I didn't like about it is that it is VERY thick and difficult to cut (better have a sharp blade on your mower) and turned brown, like it was dead, in the winter. She had it for many years and it does keep the weeds out, and it was drought-resistant. Not sure where they got it from, though.

We got some of those plugs several years ago and they never took off. I'd be curious what results others have had.

My lawn is zoysia grass and during the hottest part of the summer it is the best looking lawn on the block. It needs to be well watered until it establishes itself, once established it is very easy to maintain. Go for it! I can't tell you were to buy it, I had part grass and part zoysia grass when I bought the house. I have a tool for making my own plugs, and used the existing zoysia to make my own plugs.

Plugs need to be compacted(smashed down) or they won't grow. Plugs can not hold moisture as they are too airy and dry off quickly because the root system is expose to air. You need to water to keep it moist and don't let it dry out for extended time. Plugs need more attentive moisture light watering versus sod since the sod root system is intact.

Once they start to establish, use 16-4-8 fertilizer, it works quite well. The more fert, the more water is required, and the faster they spread out.

Are these plugs in cups. If they are aerated plugs then it needs to be flatten down as the roots are exposed to air. I might have mistaken what type of plugs you were referring to.

My aunt and uncle put it in their yard years ago and it kept the weeds out. I tried it, but it never took off. The complaint I've heard the most about it was that it turned brown too early and stayed that way too late. My neighbor wouldn't think of using it because he liked a nice green yard as close to year round as he could have it. Me, I didn't like cutting grass or messing with weeds and more than I have to. If it is brown I could care less.
