HI:
I am looking for rustoleum zinc rich cold galvanizing compound. I can find it in spray, and will probably get some soon, but really want the gallon size, which was about $30 A FEW YEARS AGO. Grainger list it about $197 per gallon, although I can probably get some discount. I have 2 new complete car exhaust systems to paint before installing, and past experience has shown this to help. No Lowes or Menards except spray, and the local Ace has a latex based that says don't use on ferrous (iron or steel based?) metals @ $50? I emailed Rustoleum but no joy yet. Anybody have any obvious solutions? Thanks.

I would change course and opt for an SS exhaust. Nothing you put on the outside will help all that much. Some exhaust systems are aluminized which will get the inside and outside. To be effected it needs to be hot dipped or plated. Something more than painted on.

+1 Well said.

As is often the case, things rust from the inside. But nothing beats SS.

The same as on my 2002 Ranger / 124,000 miles.

In the 60's / 70's, I remember people changing their 'muffler' every couple years.

I have 'aerosol' cans of Zinc Spray.

Made by Rust-Oleum
Called Cold Galvanizing Compound

Zinc - Rich Coating
Dried film contains 93% pure zinc
For the Repair of Galvanized Steel, Sheet Metal and Fences

May not be what you want though;
Can says, "do not apply to surfaces that, when heated, exceed 200*F

If it comes in a gallon can, would temps be any different ? ? ?

The Rustoleum spray stuff is the same, but the gallon size gives a more generous brush application. I had a 1978 F150 with a very cheap dual system. Painted carefully when new, using thick brush and spray where hard to reach, repainted at 4 year mark. Usually drove it 2 x 12 minutes every other day. Rubber mounts failed at 4 year mark. System still excellent at 8 year mark when vehicle went away. Muffler shop very surprised. SS system is about $400 VS. $137 DELIVERED, x 2 vehicles. Zinc much cheaper! Except for header part near engine I think no part of exhaust is 200f or more. These are new exhaust systems, not rusted ones. Thanks for input!

Leaded gas came with "scavenging" chemicals that kept lead from building up in the engine. But all this rotted exhaust like nobody's business.

You'll note Midas and Mienikie started marketing themselves as complete undercar specialists when muffler money started drying up.
