Zero turn Kohler engine oil recommendation

I have a 2014 Kubota zero turn with a Kohler engine. The manual specs anything from 5w30 to Kohler branded 10w50. Best price I’m finding the kohler oil is $22 per quart . What would you recommend? Only ran in the NY summer, put about 10 hours on it a month. I was thinking maybe an hdeo in the 5w40 flavoring? T6 or delvac esp? Thoughts?

My OPE get whatever is leftover from the cars. These days it is simply R&P 5W30. Usually the rest of the mower falls apart around the engine, so I don't overthink it.

My Kohler Command gets the leftovers (new oil that is, not used) from previous vehicle oil changes. It's got about a million hours in it. Lots of xW-30 of on-sale brand oil.

Amsoil Small Engine Oil. Just pick your weight. It only cost about $16.00 per quart.

Usually use whatever 15w-40 I'm putting in the trucks. That 06 gravely zt with a v twin kholer has been good for 20 years burns no oil to this day and it's a cheap residential unit used on a small farm with thick pond weeds tall grass and some brush and rocks so it gets used hard but it's still good just ugly from all the use and abuse.

Change it yearly right before mowing season starts. I just bought it this year though.

Several of us like to put in an HDEO oil 15w-40, an API 15w-50, or 20w-50.

Like many have said above we do the same on our air cooled OPE gasoline engines including our V-Twin Kohler and Kawasaki engines.

Summary: Use a HDEO diesel rated oil (API CK/J-4) in either 15W-40 (when cold starts and operating at OAT above +40F) or 5W-40 (If cold starts and operating below +40F). The Rotella T6 and Mobli Delvac offerings you mention would be fine.

For the few air cooled OPE engines that have hydraulic valve lash adjusters we use 5W-40 at all temperatures but some would say to adhere to the manufacturer specifications if they recommend lighter viscosity oils.

We change oil at 50 hours or once per season unless operating in very dusty conditions. We have one ECV990 38HP Kohler that calls for 200 hour oil change interval but we still change the 2.1 quarts at 50 hours. CK/J-4 HDEO engine oil is still reasonable at around $15 per gallon non-synthetic and $30 per gallon synthetic at Walmart. With 50 hour changes we use the non-synthetic normally. Some of our OPE engines are over 45 years old with 1000 plus hours and never had to do any internal engine work yet.

How hot does the oil get?
Height adjusting the grass an inch shorter in small lots isn't going to get the oil super hot, 30wt is fine.
If you're mowing a field where your forward speed is determined by the grass over loading the engine you probably want 50wt.
