yup, rotor blanks vary in quality

That pink thing may be used with aftermarket wheels. The size of a hub on an aftermarket wheel isn't always the same as OE, so wheel manufacturers often supply a spacer so the wheel fits the hub.

Yeah, looks like a hubcentric spacer.

WRAP-UP

4th new rotor (for 2 wheels) did the trick. Of the first two, one had a crack that was visible. The second looked ok but after a few day's driving, the patterns from wearing in showed uneven contact on the outboard face (inboard looked fine). replacing each of those 2 new rotors with two more did the trick.

I believe both of the second new rotors came from a new batch. One came direct from the factory, and the other came from a source that was out of stock until the factory made a run of shipments.

I'm still inside the burn-in period, but braking is more responsive. I want to see how they hold up long-term-- they have been fantastic on the mdx. This experience has certainly been disappointing but maybe we're good to go from here. Thanks for everyone's help!

I think the drilled rotors in the high end cars are mostly for style these days. Carbon rotors don't even carry as much heat through them as the iron and steel rotors do, which is why they have to use such a large brake caliper. The heat from friction mostly goes there instead.

If a rotor is vented, I have a hard time understanding just how cross drilling increases the airflow through them anyway. They're centrifugal compressors, essentially. The efficiency of these pathways depends on smooth, uninterrupted flow.

I'll say one thing for cross drilled and slotted, though; they sure as [censored] shed the water out of brakes alot faster than solid face rotors. That is one major difference I always noticed between solid face rotors and drilled/slotted, no matter what kind of pad I was using.

Looks like someone try to fit a 13" wheel on a Honda that originally came with 14" (Civic HX rims on other Civic or Integra?)
