Wow, I am facinated by that filter. It appears to be a real "depth" filter. I am wondering if the seal across the end is because it has some moisture absorption capacity and is sent out "dry". I think I will try to find one of them to play with. Any way to determine if there is a cross with any american made filters? I guess I will go to the store and find what AC filter that car takes and then look around for any others that take it. The top and bottom construction are also quite interesting. Thanks a lot for that post. RW

The cross reference is to a standard filter. Baldwin's cross is their B1405, " Microlite Lube Spin-on: Anti-Drainback Valve, 20 PSI By-Pass Valve."

These 90915-20004 filters are sold at some Toyota and Lexus dealers.

My choice is between this felt filter or a similar standard Toyota filter without a bypass valve (yup, I cut one open), or standard aftermarket filters...a few pleated media with a 20 psi bypass valve, most pleated media with an 8 psi bypass valve.

Is the bypass valve setting determined by the engine characteristics, or the filter media characteristics? (I'd guess mainly the latter, with the need for the former to be in compliance...sound good?)

These photos on the left of this link are of the better OE filter for Toyota V8 engines, the 90915-20004.

Your thoughts on this filter, pls. The filter is installed on new engines from the factory and after major engine repairs. They retail for $10 and some dealers offer them for ~$6.50. Many dealers don't even stock them. A standard pleated filter, 90915-YZZB5, is usually installed subsequently, and the usual $5 to $3 price. Both filters are made by Denso.

It was as I feared. The AC cross for this filter is the dreaded PF-53 which fits nothing on my fleet. I wonder if the filter is actually made by baldwin for Denso? RW

The Toyota/Lexus 90915-20004 filter has a 3/4-16 thread and a 2-3/4" x 2-9/19" gasket. They're made in Japan by Denso. The filter material seems to be a kind of resin impregnated felt.

Stuart,

The Toyota 08922-02011 referenced in the above link fits the Camry 3.0 liter V6s as well as the 22R-E four cylinder truck engine; I use this OEM filter on both my '91 Toyota Pickup and '99 Camry LE V6 and have one left on my shelf right now (I looked to make sure!). I plan on buying one of those 90915-20004 filters and giving it a try on my Camry. My only concern is that the increased length will bring the end of the filter closer to the front exhaust manifold.

Looks like a nice filter. Now let's get someone with a history of analysis to run one and analize their oil. Same engine, same driving habits, same oil, different filters.

I'm a Camry owner also but Patman just looked up the purolator Camry V6 filter and it shows a bypass of 12-15 psi.

Will the 20 psi bypass cause problems?

Now I'm really confused.

The baldwin filter for the Camry has an 8 psi bypass.

I guess a lower bypass setting is safer??? It certainly will filter less but ensure oil flow.

If the bypass is higher than OEM I can imagine possible oil starvation problems.

Unfortuantly, I don't know a thing about oil flow and the importance of bypass settings.

It totally depends on the resistance to oil flow in the filter media. The bypass is rated in psid--pounds per square inch differential. If the differential between the inlet side of the filter and the outlet side >7 psi the bypass valve starts to open. It's probably fully open at about 9 psi (unless it's a Fram which never closes).

So, what's right? The dealer's filter for my engine has no bypass. The filter that came on the engine from the factory has a bypass that Baldwin says is 20 psid. Amsoil, Mobil 1, etc., supply filters with a 7-9 psid bypass. I'm sticking with the OE filters until I find out more.
