You guys that complain about overtightened drain..

I serviced an 09 Lexus ES350 that was previously looked at by the dealership and couldn't get the oil filter off. I actually broke my filter socket on a beaker bar and had to hammer it to get it loose.

So much for 3/4s turn after the gasket touches the block

Well I guess it will never loosen up and dump the oil out on the road....

Just out of curiosity what was the oil fill amount and torque spec on the drain plug?

To help a neighbor I had to pound a 2' long screwdriver thru the oil filter and pull really hard. It came loose with a very hard sudden pull using both hands and a loud "pop". I think it was a bit over tightened.

The previous oil change was done at the dealer, one of those 3 free oil change deals, and the lot boy that did the work must have been a gorilla. I don't think a regular dealership mechanic would have done something like that.

I ran into the opposite Saturday.

Changing the oil on a new-to-her 97 Volvo S70.

The plug came out like a breeze. Surprised me.

Then I looked at it. Whoever put it in last, had used some heavy duty aluminum foil to tighten it up enough to keep it in place. Someone lost the original bolt, and jerry rigged in one that almost fit.

I felt bad telling the lady her new car was sort of monkeyed together

If the plug had fallen out she would likely have wrecked her engine and there`d be no plug or aluminum foil left as evidence. Some people will stoop pretty low!

Reminds me of my dad selling his car to a neighbour. Before delivering it, he did a bunch of maintenance (like new brake pads all around). Makes you smile.

There was an engineer at my first job who keep his cars going until they were just about to fail and then sol them to coworkers...you can imagine how popular he was and I was warned about him in my first week in the group. A tech joined after I had been there a couple of years and nobody liked him, either, so he didn't get the warning...he bought a Civic from the engineer and I think it lasted less than two weeks. "As is!"
Similar situation at my next job, one draftsman sold a Microbus to another draftsman who had just joined and I think it lasted less than two days. When the buyer started making lots of noise, the first guy started telling management that he wasn't doing a good job and the new guy was placed on the chopping block. I warned the guy and he took off on his own after a couple of weeks, lined up a contract far away.

No idea what the tq is. It's now tightened till it stopped and then got a tap from my palm. The wrench size that fits the plug is a 1.50 inch. Prolly a 1.25 thread I guess.

Oil amount was 9 GALLONS.

I wonder if there is a Fumoto for truck engines. If I was an owner/operator, I would do my own LOFs and have a Fumoto. If not a Fumoto, I would find some kind of valve in the plumbing section of the hardware store. I wonder if Fumotos will pass DOT inspections. They can be complete jerks about things at weigh stations.

A lot of times you just get a OF since so many vehicles no longer have zerk fittings. Depending on the shady level of the shop you might not even get a O or an F.

Most of the guys at quick lube places these days don't even know what a grease gun is.

I think my '76 Nova got greased but I'm not sure if anything I've owned since then had grease points?
