My SPAM catcher nails them, but what's the point of this type of SPAM. I get about 50 SPAMS per 24hr period, I had about 10 like this, but with different words. Some are just goobbledeegook.

I have received weird SPAM that does not make sense like what you received. I don't know if it was from the same address or not-I delete that garbage immediately. It seems to me that it was from different addresses. I am pretty sure it was from at least two different addresses. I can't tell you now-the stuff is gone.

It really made me wonder, because if somebody is sending SPAM that does not make sense-what is the point? The Spammers want to make money. Maybe this is some sort of weird new technique that they are using? Seems pointless to me.

Maybe it's Al Qaeda plotting something and
broadcasting over e-mail in inscrutable code.

Spam seems to come in 3 flavors.
Unsolicited solicitations. Send out a million of them, and make one sale, and you are ahead. I am appalled at how hard it is to get off otherwise legitimate companies lists including Pfizer and Drs. Foster Smith. I will buy elsewhere. I think it is absolutely stupid to buy anything from a spammer.

Malicious. Very low quality people deliberately send things that will damage other peoples computers. Some of the viruses will resend themselves to everybody in the address book.

Just plain time wasters. Beware, there may be viruses hid in the gobbledygook.

I think there was a real upsurge in all of the trash about a year ago. I have had very little since I switched to cable, Road Runner in July. I am not sure if it is their filters or just a different address. I hate to see my new address added to dozens of others being forwarded all over the net. I keep telling people that if they are going to send things to me as part of a long list to use bcc or undisclosed recipients. I find it very difficult to get any answers either through Road Runner's tech service or their incredibly slow, unfriendly web site. The few things I have gotten since then have been very dangerous. They look like legitimate warnings from Microsoft and say install this patch immediately to protect your computer. Since I am running Linux, I disregard them. I hope the new federal law reduces some of this crap. There are some restrictions on free speech I support.

there is a "valid" link buried somewhere in the message. the random words are used to fool some spam detection software.

Yes, all too much spam such as this graces my inbox. A couple hundred in just 3 days.

I found out why...I post to newsgroups for Microsoft and Novell support. I used my real email address so techs could email back. What I didn't know until it was too late, was that spammers comb through all messages on these news servers and grab all the emails from any of these posters. Aggrrehhhhhh! Slimy blokes! I hate spam!

It too late, I'm on way too many spammer's lists.

Anyone get the "investment opportunity" emails from Africa? These look really legit, but are totally bogus.

There is an agency of the government that is interested in those rip offs. It is part of the treasury department. Forward them to; [email protected]

I get a ridiculous amount of spam, and I usually delete it without opening it, but I've been fooled twice now by spam which I thought was not spam, but instead an email I'd be interested in reading. The title of the email was "great oil" but it turned out to be some sex lubricant!

I doubt that anyone would send mass mailings for no reason. It's possible that they're sending garbage like that to disguise the reason they sent you the message.

They may be checking to see if yours is an active email address (to sell a list later). They may be checking to see what your computer does with the message. Or they may be seeing what it takes to get huge numbers of posts without being labeled as "spam" so they can use their success to sell their capabilities to some advertisers.

i highly recommend mozilla. it's an open source browser. available for windows, mac os, os/2, linux, and various unix flavors

it can be downloaded at www.mozilla.org. mozilla will block pop ups, among other nice features.

another option is to go to www.tucows.com and look for something there.

Pop ups are easy.

POP UP STOPPER (free version)

Thanks for the input folks. I'll bet it's the looking for what gets through to good addresses thing.

I also just wanted to be clear that my SPAM catcher routinely, easily stops these and it also catches the viral ones as well. I use Postini and it seems to be a painless, safe method to see the spam, even safely open it (if you are into that sort of thing

) and quickly mass delete it.

I like to see all my mail, because sometimes even the best SPAM catchers will stop an email from a BiTOG poster, if he's on HotMail, sends his email to 50 people and uses "XXX Hotties with Lube" in his header

Just today, yeah, didn't make any sense. Have a bunch of words in my AOL Spam Filter, had to spell Viagara about 4 different ways to catch it all.
