Latest UOA. 5speed 07 corolla, filter was the purolator L14477. The filter had been on for two oil changes, so roughly 10k miles on the oil filter.

I find this UOA interesting because last winter I ran PP 5w20, and this winter I ran regular conventional YB 5w30. I only had one of the cheapy gallons(4 qts) so I needed an additional 1/2 qt of PP 5w20 to hit the full mark on the dipstick. I didn't feel like going to the store to buy any oil so I just used what I had.

Also of note is a change in driving style. I changed jobs recently and my new commute is shorter with significant more time spent idling at stoplights. I spend more than half my commute idle at stoplights. My old commute was stop and go traffic too, but the lights were much more spread apart and on cold days the car would feel up to operating temp (20 minutes). Now I am only 5 miles away and go much slower. There were days this winter that the needle was just beginning to rise as I pulled into the work parking lot. My commute is so short I wish I could ride my bicycle, but I have to wear nicer clothes and they don't have a shower. This is the biggest reason I went back to PP 5w20 to replace this oil. That and I have a couple of OCIs worth left. I bought it back when it was BOGO.

Blackstone comments:
The addition of the 5W/20 oil helped lower the viscosity so this looks more like a 20W oil than a
30W oil. But that's okay...this oil is clearly working well in this engine. The trace of gas is probably from
something operational. It's not a problem. No moisture or anti-freeze was found. Wear continues to look
good and we still don't see any signs of a problem developing mechanically. The TBN read 2.8, this time,
even though the oil was in use longer. Low silicon and insolubles indicate very good air and oil filtration.
Looking nice at 30,682 miles!

For your driving conditions that's an excellent report. Good to see an UOA used the way it was designed for to get a trend. There is no real wear to speak of.

Shell makes good oils.

I have to ask why is the uoa interesting with one winter PP and one YB? I am looking at the numbers and considering the miles on the engine and probably both the oils are more than adequate to keep the parts seperated And GPII+ oils are really good . Is the difference because of the GPIII and GPII+ base oils?

good looking report (s) . Makes me want to go with the PENNZOIL 5w-30 for the new '09 YARIS 4 door liftback that'll be due for it's 1st oil change very soon . Wish RITE-AID or WALGREENS would have the SHELL or PENNZOIL on sale in the upcoming weeks . Can get it for less than $1.75 a quart at times . Wonder if SHELL regular 5w-30 would be comparable to the PENNZOIL Yellow Bottle for endurance ? Plan on draining the factory oil at 1,000 > 1,500 miles and then running the PENNZOIL or SHELL 5w-30 for about 3,000 > 3,500 miles and then run close to the 5,000 mile mark due to the warranty . May go back to conventional for the '08 YARIS sedan . Have been using SHELL or PENNZOIL 5w-30 synthetics since 1,400 miles . Has about 8,700 miles as of now . Thanks for the post .
