Yard Man/MTD All Wheel Steering

Anyone ever deal with one of these before? Brought this home from the wife's grandpa, and told him I would try to fix it. It's a 1998-99 or so Yard Man, made by MTD. The rear steering is messed up so the rear wheels are turned when the front wheels are straight. Obviously something is bent or out of adjustment, but I haven't had a chance to really look at it yet. Just brought it home last night and rolled it in the garage.

Trying to drive it this way is a bit interesting!

can you turn the steering wheel so the rears are straight?

then reset the front steering gear?

not sure how its all connected. Maybe something bent or skipped/broke a tooth?

A yard tractor that requires a 4 wheel alignment? Now I've seen it all. Hope you figure it out.

I had one of them. You probably need to replace or adjust the tire rod ends. What did mine in was the cheap stamped steering gear and the sloppy steering that came with it.

Well, dug into it a little and found that the gears in the steering box must be stripped. The part that moves the linkage for the rear steering doesn't move like it's supposed to. Sometimes it catches, but sometimes it slips.

Well a steering box is an improvement over the cheap stamped 'fingers' that mine had. Still it's a cheap made mower IMHO. The four wheel steering was great when it worked right.
