Rwd and mid engined cars did do well in rally back in the day...

I suspect one of these with modern tires, shocks, and engine management would make any fwd rally car look pretty weak... Probaby any AWD WRC car too!
Anyways, my point is that its hard to generalize that any configuration is better or worse than another, and almost anything is fun to drive at the track as fast as you can.

Fox body Mustangs are a joke. No power, poor handling, poor brakes, poor quality, T-5 a joke for a trans.... the list goes on and on. Oh yeah, I owned a 1991 LX 5.0 so I know what I'm talking about.
It ran high 12's with bolt ons but a Civic is engineered 100 times better than any Fox Mustang.

I would hope a modern car would be better engineered than something that was developed in the late part of the 1970's, where the Fox platform has its roots.

The Fox platform is by far the best, and most popular drag racing platform out there. That is its forte. Other things? Not so much. Which is why I said a Termi or IRS-equipped Cobra would be a better point of comparison on a road course.

The Fox was no worse than any other car from that era. The Camaro/Firebird/Trans Am used the same junk Borg Warner transmission for example.

Taking the platform out of context and comparing it to something 30 years newer is the joke.

The '76 CVCC we had ran well with minimal oil consumption until we sold it at ~160K.
The Honda four cylinders we have had have been reliable, economical and durable.
What I have always liked about Honda fours is that they produce smooth power all the way to redline, and usually produce peak power at fairly high revs.
Fun engines for those of us who prefer driving sticks.
Best engines?
I don't think there is such an animal.
