i would not say they are the best but, it terms of reliability they have a good rep
now for transmissions thats another story lol

They work great in my lawn Mower!! It's just an engine, what about the rest of the car. i sit in a honda i feel like i'm in a plastic bubble. The cummins and Hemi is a great engine, but the the problem is what surrounds it. Everybody IMO puts out decent engines these days

For what? Their automotive engines are really good, save the V6 which is average, and obviously their transmissions aren't very good at all. Their outboards are overcomplicated for a market where most engines die of neglect. Their small engines are also very good, but expensive.

Best is subjective, different people have different criteria.

One reason they could be the "best" is that combined, they make more internal combustion engines than anyone else anywhere. So, they have the experience and the cost savings of large production.

I feel this way in almost every new/newish car I sit in. My accord feels nothing like a plastic bubble. The interior is made so much better in my '01 compared to the new ones,in my opinion.

Interesting. I had an '00 Accord and thought that "plastic bubble" was actually an apt term to describe it, sans some leather. If the new ones are even worse, that's really sad.

It seems like the C27A engines (old Legends) are over-built and under stressed. Two bolt mains that are cross-bolted, 4-valve per cylinder doesn't require a lot of lift, etc. And only rated at 160HP.

Mine has over 400K miles on it. I don't hear of many head gasket issues with this engine either.

Hydraulic lifter noise is a different story, however.

I'm in no way ripping on honda, but I went to the motortrend show this year. Sis in law wanted me to go check out the hondas for her and I was not at all impressed with the interior. my buddy has an 05 accord and IMO it is much better put together then the new Accord was or any of the hondas for that matter. Whats with the dipstick color anyway? You can spot that thing from the otherside of the convention center.

As stated before, Honda is the largest maker of internal combustion engines in the world. They also happen to have a history of making engines that sip gas, meet emissions and are very easy to maintain. For example, the original Civic required no catalytic convertor due to it's engine design.

Honda does make excellent engines but saying one company makes the best engine is like saying that the shade tree in your backyard is the best tree in the world. It's a big ocean with lots of fish that do lots of different things, "best" is situation specific adjective.

Odd, considering it seems like almost everything in my car is leather/leather wrapped except a few faceplates and the dash/outer part of the door panel, which are a plushy textured material anyway.

Honda is the master of 4cyl engines. It's they're specialty.

Remember the CRX? TODAYS hybrids can't even come close to it's 50mpg and that was a NORMALLY aspirated engine. No batteries, just Honda know-how.

The small fiat 1.3L engines were much stouter than the small honda engine in my wifes 90 civic. The rocker arms wore on the rocker shaft and the valves couldnt be adjusted at only 50K miles. The TEC coil-in-cap distributor only woked in completely dry weather due to a poor cap design. Crossfire in the cap killed the cat on that car in just a little over 2 years. Honda didnt have a fix other than "spray it with wd 40". The Accord engines, OTOH, seem to be long lived though.

I sold Hondas and had the opportunity to drive 100's and 100's of them, new, used, and lease returns. As far as their engines being the best? They're OK. The best, that would be a matter of opinion, certainly not mine.

I remember not so long ago Toyota was considered the best, people are re-thinking that. When I was a kid Chevy was everyone's favorite. LOL. Not starting a flame war, stating opinion, which BTW everyone is entitled to.

Times change, sometimes with a blink of an eye. Me I'll take a Ford over a Honda, Chevy, or Toyota any day. LOL

Well, my experience with Honda engines is that they are least likely to have a gasket fail. That, and "Check engine" light problems aren't common either.

That in mind, Honda built some duds.

Often their 1990s engines would have a distributor fail and cause a cranking no start condition. The whole distributor would need replacement and it could be costly.

Having to deal with the vacuum operated smog devices in 1980s Accords was a huge pain.

Up until recently, all Honda engines had timing belts, and that is always a risk.
