X1R additive - inducted into Nasa's hall of fame

I have heard a lot of talk here in Houston about this additive. A local radio car talk show host "swears" by this stuff. It looks like nasa loves it and... even military personnel are getting in on it....

kind of expensive, but I don't know.

Thought I'd throw this out for a conversation piece.

Very interesting reading about their PRIVATE LABEL program. Basically anyone can slap their name in it for a price I guess. I don't see any real test results or info on actual product testing. Being the cynic, I am very leary.
 
no test results...at least right now. But they do have data(msds) on their products. But I haven't gotten to reading them quite yet...busy now.

i tried this additive and i stopped using it when i found out that it has chorinated additives in it...i found a great additive synergyn's oil additive which is there additive package in all there oils....i also use schaeffer's oil additive 132
 
i ran schaeffers 15w40 in my truck, and about 200 miles before i was to change my oil, i put a bottle of x1r in as directed from them. now since schaeffers already has an excellent barrier lubricant in the oil, i never noticed any difference when i put the x1r in. after 200 miles of normal use, i drained and pulled the sample. when the lab results came back my concerns were a reality.

with 6600 miles on my oil the results showed my ep/antiwear (zinc/ph) levels higher than norm for this amount of miles (zinc-1180/ph-1078 norm would be around 730-850). also the detergents (cal) was much higher at over 3660ppms (norm 730-850ppm). now what that did is elevate my oxidation level that was norm was at 33.
i also found sulfur levels that was never a problem (always at 0 out of 100%) now at 30%. my viscosity level was higher than normal, (15cst) where as it would be around 13.47-14.

my thought on this is, i will personally never run x1r in anything i own again. i can see where in a race application, this is an excellent way to add some extra protection but, then the oil is changed after a few races and race engines are subject to rebuilds more often than personal car engines so the oxidation doesn't have time to do any damage to the soft metals. with higher levels of oxidation, your soft metals would begin to show possible damage by using this technology in a conventional engine.


This barrier additive does work as such but it inbalances the additives not allowing the oil to do its' job.

wow. That's quite a test that you did on X1R. I was wondering if anyone here ever tried it out.

Well I was talking to my father about this and this is the way he puts it. X1R will probably be great for extreme applications such as tow trucks, racing, and in NASA's case...ball bearings.

Nasa actually purchased and used X1R for their very very extreme and harsh conditions. The end result was that it apparently helped them a lot. And I guess they are still using it....they haven't had a break down on those expensive bearings anymore.

So I guess the harsher the condition the better this product works.

Extream conditions call for extream additives.In Europe they can run over 100mph and perhaps that is why they have a additive pkg. for not only this but it extends the OCI.Does this mean your driving conditions and type of driving should dictate what oil you use. In North America, passenger car motor oils are engineered to meet the recommended OEM oil drain intervals of between 3,000 and 7,500 miles depending upon the type of driving—severe or normal. In Europe, oils are engineered for longer drain intervals, often exceeding 20,000 miles. The components needed to meet these needs are usually quite similar, but the way we formulate them into a performance package can be quite different. Our formulated performance packages are then supplied to oil marketers, who blend them with base oil, viscosity modifier, and pour point depressant to create the finished motor oil.

this is old news and this product is not the result of nasa using this, it was their grease according to the article not the x1r this stuff has chor. products in it....if you want a great additive use torco's mpx, synergyn's oil additive, schaeffers moly # 132
