wow had to share my results-PYB

since i bought my 2001 integra in 2007 at 55k, it has always made this rattle/rumbling noise on a cold start. here is a video of another integra that makes the exact same noise. this noise doesn't seem to be any concern since my car now has 125k miles and no engine problems.
the noise occurs at :22-24 seconds into the video.

oils that i've used in the past all in 5w30 flavors:
castrol gtx, castrol syntec, valvoline synpower, mobil clean, royal purple, pennzoil platinum

A week ago, i changed my oil with Pennzoil Conventional SN 5w30 and guess what? the past 4 or 5 cold starts, paying very close attention, i have NOT notice that noise. And this past week has been the coldest this year. Before any of you say its the filter......i did not change the filter this time. it only had 3.5k miles on it so opted to leave it in for another 4k miles.

Ive been very reluctant to try Pennzoil conventional again since seeing the head of our old 88 civic that was on Pennzoil conventional since day one. It was heavily varnished even with at least 3 oil changes per year. Now, I plan to stick with Pennzoil conventional for a long time

It is quite a good oil. PP just cleaned some extremely stubborn varnish on my uncle's Accords' dipstick and around the fill hole/baffle. Pennzoil has some of the best lubes out for most PCM's now.

Thats a result of the high moly I do believe. One reason we see so many people praise Pennzoil conventional for quieting an engine down.

IMO a quiet engine is much better the a noisey engine. Some seem to think it doesn't matter but they can never back that that up with common sense

Yeah I don't like that sound. That is the sound of the oil filter filling up with motor oil I think, because you hear that on some cars with a engine oil change. I have never heard that sound once on my engines with SOPUS. Does it mean anything? I don't know but I like to know "it sticks" so to speak.

If you are referring to the sewing machine noise from the valve train on cold start up that pretty much all Honda/Acuras have, high moly/zzdp stops it.

Sounds like startup valvetrain noise to me. My Prius has this as well, and perhaps on the next run I'll try some Pennzoil conventional.

The problem I see is that extra loud exhaust note. I don't know how anybody could hear valvetrain noise over that.

the noise is mainly from the intake. those exhaust are pretty quiet..slightly louder than stock.

I have noticed that the engine in my Outback, which has the rather classic Subaru piston slap issue, quiets down faster with higher Moly oils. It preferred SM rated conventional Formula Shell (high Moly) over Pennzoil conventional and Pennzoil Platinum, but once the SN change occurred FS has much less Moly and it now slappy again. The new high moly SN Pennzoil Conventional has it quiet quickly again.

Actually serious issue? Doubt it. Making me stock up on Quaker State Advanced Durability and Pennzoil Conventional now? Yup.

Can never back that up with common sense?

And where is YOUR back up? You have none.

The noise issue is anecdotal at best, and to date no one has backed up either claim with scientific empirical results.
