would you refuse this car (break rust)?

Alot of the tire chains take advantage of gullible people down here in the jungle with that rust...They charge them 800 bucks to clean the rust off the wheels for them...All it needs is one decent drive.

How do you reach the back side?

That or grease :)

This has been going on since disc brakes became popular in the 70s. But with open wheel designs we're starting to notice.

Mine, too.

Literally in an hour or so!

Can't see it as a problem.

Check the rest of the car for corrosion. If it's there, it's places you can't see.

Unlike body rust, the calipers can be replaced easily.

Totally normal and the rust on the callipers can easily be removed, if it bothers you, I see this on all cars in Ontario.

What I would be more worried about is paint chips that haven't been taken care of and the condition of the undercarriage, if the car was never oil sprayed, I would pass on it because with rust, it's not the stuff that you can see that will get you in the end, it's all the areas hidden away that can collect water that will rust first.

Thanks for all the comments/feedback.
I also don't feel good about it: my buddy took a bunch of pics, and it shows a bit of "rough" handling...for only 26k miles: curb rash on 1 wheel, scrapes on arm rest, and numerous tiny paint chips.

Sounds like maybe you should not be buying a used one. The things you're describing are unfortunately normal - they happen during the regular course of use, especially paint chips. Keep looking though... how many cars have you seen so far?

well I am looking at a ZHP that has 12k miles enthusiast owned, etc. now THAT is one clean looking car.
I WILL have to travel to get the car that I like, that's for sure

oh btw I did look at 2 ZHP coupes nearby - both overpriced and imola red - i know it's rare and all that, but i just don't like red(-dish) cars much.
Those 2 cars had more miles (almost 2x) than the 1 in chicago, and didn't have any apparent paint chips on them that I could notice. and inside was mint, too. I definitely think the chicago one had rough use.

I pretty much have to avoid 2004's as they come only with that weird fuzzy alacantara wheel which I hear feels nice but gets fuzzy and deteriorates very quickly. Constant complaining by owners made BMW switch to a leather wheel in late 2005 and up ZHP coupes.

The rust in these photo is nothing to be concerned about.
I'd be more worried about the Continental tires.
