My wife has a 2004 Camry with a 4 cyl engine and does 90% of driving in the city. I was thinking about using Mobil 1 0W-40 in her engine, any thoughts?

M1 5W30 would be more suitable. The M1 0W40 will probably make the engine feel "sluggish".

Likely at most ambient temperatures, at cold start up, the 5 or even 10w-30 would be thinner than the 0w-40!

M1 10w-30 seems liek an optimal fit for most toyota engines. 5w30 for warranty though...

I'd run a 0w-30 synthetic in 90% of new vehicles. The only exceptions would be some European and Japanese high performance motors where a thicker 5w-40 would be preferred.

I'd go with 0w-30 - or the new 5w30 Extended Performance version of Mobil 1. Keep in mind that cooling the engine is as important as lubricating it and thinner lubricants have better heat transfer properties.

I have a 2003 Camry with the same engine. M1 0W40 will work just fine in it and can be run year round. I prefer a good 5W40 over a 0W40 but either will work just fine year round in this engine. I have run 0W30,5W30,10W30,10W40,5W40 and now a blend of Castrol synthetic 0W30 and 10W40(they were on clearance at walmart for $1.50). To date Redline 5W40 had the most positive impact on performance. I ran the Redline 5W40 down to -18°F dureing a long cold Michigan winter. None of the 40Wt. oils made it slugish at all!!! M1 0W40 would be the last oil that would make it slugish as it is a thin 40Wt.!

My winter oil this year is a blend of M1 0W40 and M1 TSUV 5W40.

if she is going to do 90% of city driving I would use 5W-20 in that engine. she will rarely get up to the operating temp..so using any thicker oil would be wastefull!

Maybe agree in principle, but I don't think Toyota sanctions this. M1, 5w30EP would be close enough, if we're assuming a lot of short trips. Don't know if fuel dilution will be a problem or not. Could be?

5W20 would not be a good idea in a Toyota. Toyota does not use or recomend 5W20 in any country in the world in any application. Toyota does sanction the use of 40Wt. in other countrys. Every case of 20Wt. being used in a Toyota wear has increased!!

if she never gets oil up to the operating temperature then she will efectily be running with 30wt...and I doubt that would have any negative effects...

so it depends on how hot her oil/engine gets during these short trips?

if these short trips are <5-7 miles I would say she would be ok!
