Worth upgrading thermostat?

To start: I have a 25 year old house built to the codes of 25 years ago. The furnace and programmable thermostat are about 13 years old. We have programmed the thermostat to be 66*F when we're here, 60*F when we're sleeping, and let it control the temperatures by its programming.

I'm looking at fancy thermostats with their promises of energy savings, and wondering what they do above us already programming the thermostat, and letting it be. Part of me wants to have something fancy, and another part is saying to let the current one be.
 
You really need to do your research on these thermostats. I have two nests for upstairs and downstairs. I love them. I was coming from white rodgers mercury thermostats.

There are reviews on amazon I encourage you to read. I know for the Nest, there are years of reviews to read for first generation and second generation. Most folks complain the thermostat was not compatible to their furncace or a/c system, when the nest thermostat website said it was. With your age of your systems, you really need to investigate. My systems are from 2001, they work with the nest thermostat without the C-wire.

For these thermostats to deliver on the promised savings, you need to have a really leaky house with bad insulation. You get "coast down" after you leave for work, and a well insulated house will only lose a couple degrees all day.

The math is over my head (I got a D in calc II) but you're paying for the heat "under the curve", something something delta between inside and outside temp. A leaky house "cooperates" better with a smart thermostat.

Me, when I snowblow around the house, I aim at the foundation, to add insulation. Dumb stuff like drawing the curtains will save you a few percent.
 
I don't think you'll find that you save anything replacing your existing thermostat.

Sure a new one looks "pretty" but it does the same thing as you already do now.

Adding insulation will save you more money in the long run than replacing your thermostat.
 
If you already have an electronic programmable thermostat you won't see savings. If you can't adjust the temperature swing value on yours now, you may get more comfort. I bought the Lux touchscreen 9000 when it was tops in CR testing and other than the backlight dying it's been great.

I've been tempted to get a wifi thermostat just so I can preheat the house on my way home. My schedule varies so I just turn it up & down as I come & go.
 
They are good for providing a warm house when you get up in the AM. But, they require power which the two wire thermostat system can't supply and thus need batteries. If the battery fails, many of them won't work at all, there is no default setting because a powered relay is needed switch the line. Not a good thing to happen if your out of town in the winter.
 
I would look into it, I had an old digital thermostat that came with the house that basically had one temp and that's it. I upgraded to an Aprilaire programmable thermostat. Didn't know much about it since I hadn't heard about it before but it got decent reviews. My problem was I needed to have one that works with a milti stage heat pump and most don't. It had the features that I was looking for so I went for it. It was just over $100 so not a huge loss if I ended up hating it. I have to say I am very pleased with it. I really like the fact that while a bit complicated, there are many adjustments you can make to it. Like the adjustment that was important to me was that you can adjust the sensitivity of the aux heat. The old thermostat used to just go right to the aux heat if the temp went a little lower such as when the heat kicks in. With this one I can have the heat pump do it's job and only kick in the aux heat when it really can't manage without it. That has saved quite a bit of money. The other feature I love about it is that I can have it come on to just circulate air for 30 minutes if the heat or a/c hasn't been on at all in the past hour. Great for spreading heat when you are cooking to keep temps even in the house. Has it saved me tons of money? It has but probably not THAT much of a difference there. But I have to say it does keep the house temps closer to what I would like them to be most of the time making it more pleasant to be here. To me it was a worthwhile upgrade for $100
 
the Wifi thermostat comes in handy so you can look at what it's set at on my phone instead of running up and down stairs everyday to make sure it's not running during the week. no one is up there during the weekday since my daughter is at school. my wife is known to jack up the thermostat. as she is cold all the time apparently.

on my nest, it uses the fan to squeeze all the cool air from the system when it shuts off the a/c compressor. You get free monthly nest reports comparing you with everyone in the state with what they set their thermostat on. how you rank. I'm in the top 15% of nesters in my state by the way.

There is also a handy change filter reminder on the nest, although I think it is set too long, like the GM OLM. I change my air filter every three months due to my lung condition.

I like it when I can set my nest to away on the app on my phone, when I'm out all day shopping and forget to do it when I'm leaving the house. someone mentioned about being away at work and doing the same. I gotta admit, there is alot of convenience in having a wifi thermostat.
 
The only benefit I see is for a vacation home so you can monitor the heating while your away.

HVAC systems are not designed for large temp swings, in modern houses your spending more energy to let it cool down a few degrees during the day and bring it back up than to just maintain it.

If your looking to reduce your bills add insulation, upgrade windows, and upgrade HVAC equipment.

Why wouldn't they be designed for large swings? My logic for keeping the heat way down at night and while we're at work during the day is two-fold:

1. The larger the delta-T between inside and out, the more heat loss, since heat transfer rises, regardless of insulation, with a higher delta-T. A leakier house with less insulation would see more benefit from letting the temperature droop lower during the day.

2. My old furnace takes time to heat up, as does all of the ducting. The heat coming out of the vents five minutes after the furnace has started is much warmer than at first start up. For this reason, I also have my thermostat hysteresis set at four degrees (i.e., if I set it at 60F, it will cycle between 58 and 62F)

Sure, I'm cold when I get home, but transitioning from 5F outside to 55-60F in the house makes it feel down right balmy, and only gets better when I click on the heat and warm up doubly.

The floors, walls, and every other solid object in the house still sucks up heat even after the thermostat clicks off, but that's what socks and warmer clothes are for. Besides, there are many nights where the thermostat will only need to click on one or two more times before we head to bed, and then it lowers back down to its cold setpoint, so it's not cycling over and over and over to warm up not only the air, but all of the furniture, too, because we don't spend enough time in the living room for it to do so.

At night, I run a little digital-thermostat-controlled ceramic heater, which keeps our room at a toasty 65-68F.

As an experiment, we've locked our thermostat at 70F while the weather is so cold to determine how many more therms we burn. Our combined electric and gas bill is usually less than $200. With a kid due soon, it might be that we'll be leaving the heat higher throughout the day, so I'll be interested to see whether the bill shoots through the roof or has only a moderate increase....
 
Nests are not for everyone, my mom got one for upstairs and one for the main level of the house, it absolutely does not do anything. It'll suddenly set the temperature to 70 when people are trying to sleep and boil them half to death, or while you're trying to heat the house it turns off and then you realize suddenly it's like 50 degrees in a room.

To be fair I don't think she understands how you're supposed to use it, she probably just bought it because she likes wasting money and wanted to be able to turn the temperature down on other people remotely when she didn't like the heat being on.
 
I have a programmable thermostat. Not so much for the energy savings, but for the fact that I never have to touch it anymore. It does exactly what I want it to, when I want it to.

I don't have to worry about leaving the heat "turned up" when I go to work, or when I go to bed. It keeps the house slightly cooler when I'm not here, and slightly warmer when I am.

My HVAC guys understand this better than me but you have to look at a couple of things.

1. How is your house heated, forced hot air responds quickly. Baseboard and if your even older radiators respond very slowly.

2. How old is your house and equipment. Typically I deal in new Energy Star construction so my stuff is very efficient. I turned the heat down in one of my condos I'm building yesterday morning from 66 to 55 and when I left at 3 it was still around 60...average outside temp yesterday was in the single digits. Older inefficient systems like radiators burn a lot of fuel getting all that iron up to temp, they are not designed for temp swings like that.

Everyone's equipment is different, but if you have a fairly modern house your really not going to gain a whole lot playing with the heat. You might save a few bucks if its a big house with lots of unused rooms, but you can do that without a Nest or Lyric, just hit the T stat down as you go out the door and up as you enter.

The last house I built we used Lyric's and again I was not impressed. I suspect if the owner kept the heat at say 68 for a month than played with it for another month the difference in the gas bill would be negligible. I simply view them as another item to fail, or to get hacked and have the heat turned off by an ex wife while your on vacation.

We also used Cree wifi enabled bulbs which are great, a garage door opener you can control with your phone which was also pretty good, and wifi door locks which IMHO also suck.

If you have a programmable stat, you are set.
The only two reasons that I can think of for one of these (and my Brother-in-law has one) is 1) you have a legit need to monitor and adjust your house temp remotely or 2) you need a new toy.
His need resembles #2.

I suspect I resemble #2, and wanted a reality check before spending money in an un-needed area.
