Worth the drive?

I got 5qts of Toyota 0w-20 from my local dealer for $7.04/qt, planned on mixing with Mobil 1 0w-40. Earlier I had tried to get Mazda 0w-20 locally, but no go on that. While im in Columbus, Ohio, I decided to call a local Mazda dealership for some 0w-20. Turns out that a dealership 30 miles away carries it for $7.44/qt.

So, is the Mazda oil worth the trip? Or should i just use up my Toyota oil. (The Toyota oil will be used, so no worries there)

Im failing to see why you would drive 30 miles to get oil for $0.40 more money per quart.

The incremental differences are going to be insignificant, you wont recoup your gas money.

No way Id do that, if you can get the Toyota oil local for less.

No way Id be doing something silly like mixing with Mobil 1 0w-40 either, not if I was driving two Hondas. Use that stuff straight!

I'm thinking you're spending too much energy on getting oil. Just go down to the closest store and buy M1, PU, or whatever flavor of brand name synthetic looks good to you.

The motors in your Hondas will out live you on the usual off-the-shelf stuff.

I don't see why you would deviate from what you are currently using. Those are top notch brands you're using! I'd take PU over those others any day! And the D+ and P1 are also tops!

I race the Accord, so i will be using a thicker oil than a 20 grade, hence the mixing with 0w-40. I like the high VI of the mix. Likely 2qt TGMO 0w-20 and 2.5qt Mobil 1 0w-40. But is there any noticeable advantage to using the Mazda oil? I wont get the oil this trip around. But maybe next time when I pass through. Is it alot better than the Toyota oil?

For the Civic, it will get Quaker State Ultimate Durability 0w-20 once i use up all the Mobil 1 5w-20 and Pennzoil Ultra 5w-20 i have for top-off oil. Car burns 1qt every 2500-3500 miles .

My sentiments exactly. If possible once you get the blend in your car could you pm me with any changes in running condition, acoustics, how it revs etc. I want to use the same blend 50/50 in my mustang this year,so any info I can glean from your experience would go far in my quest for the ultimate high VI oil.

Thanks

Will do, i will be changing my oil in a month and ill give you an update on the fill. Ill post a used oil analysis of the Pennzoil Ultra as well.

I would have suggested to get your hands on the Mobil 1 or Castrol Titanium 0W20 from the closest retailer near your home to mix with Mobil 1 0W40, but given that Mazda (USA) sells Idemitsu GF-5 0W20, I say drive first thing this Sunday morning and avoid traffic but go get it anyway, 60K miles round trip well worth it!

I thought "race" and "desire more VI's" aren't supposed to go together? I'm tossing in a lot of assumptions, if the OP wants to use normal passenger car drain intervals of this mix vs some blend he's going to take out early where shearing may not be as much the issue/

Not for a 60 mile round trip to buy motor oil.

Head to local Walmart for everyday low price on oil. PU is $21 for a jug.

I thought "race" and "accord" arent supposed to go together...

Just get whatever synthetic is on sale at Advance or Auto Zone. You and your engine will never know the difference, racing use or not.

AH-HA! Not my car, but never the less RACE ACCORD!

Ok i wont get the Mazda oil, but i will get some on my next trip to Columbus because i pass by the dealership on the highway. As far as racing and VII goes, all of the Mobil 1 Racing oil are 0w30 and 0w50 both using a fair amount of VII. It more depends on the type of VII used and how shear stable they are.

That whole collection of pics is pretty wild. There are some SEVERE body mods on some of the cars, whilst others are close to stock looking.
