World Engine 2.4 - Jeep

Anyone have experience with this motor? Apparently they are common in the smaller sedans and SUV's for Jeep, Mitsubishi, and Hyundai.

I just bought a 2008 Jeep Compass which has this motor. Not sure about which oil is well suited...I believe the cap says 5w20.


We read reviews on this model Jeep; the 2007 version got mixed reviews (transmission and front steering issues) while the 2008 model got much better reviews.


Any thoughts? Also, what coolant should I be using? And are Mopar OEM filters any good?

I haven't really driven the Compass/Patriot version with the 2.4 very much.

I'm kinda' a Mopar guy and it pains me to say that I like the Hyundai variant of the 2.4 in the Sonata (pre-GDi) better than I liked the Chrysler variant in the Sebring.

The Chrysler version was better isolated. One of the smoother "big" 4 cylinder engines I've experienced.

I don't know if I can pin all the problems on the DBW but it was one of the laziest throttles I've ever felt. The whole engine felt lazy and unresponsive.

The electronic throttle in our 2009 Sonata has a slow reaction compared to the cable throttle on my 1997 i30, but I suppose that's a given at this price. It is slow to react, but it has a strong jerk reaction when it finally does. Unless you were still touching the brake pedal, in which case the throttle goes into a quasi weak mode and leaves you dawdling in middle of cross traffic. That has scared me a few times.

Otherwise the engine is great for what it is, and one of the best parts of the car. Transmission, suspension, windshield, etc, are another story.

I've used mostly 5w-20 in our 2.4, which is indicated on the fill cap.

I've never driven the Chrysler variant to compare.

rented a 2009 kia optima with the 2.4, it also had lazy throttle response, but the engine was surprisingly strong, thrifty and cruised very nicely.

i have the Dodge Caliber sxt with 2.0L world engine. 5w-20 oil is all you need. Mopar oil filters are amde by Purolator. just buy a Purolator Classic and you are good to go

I have an '08 Compass (bought in the summer of '07) with the 2.4 and it has around 90,000 miles. I just use NAPA Gold filters and whatever conventional oil that is on sale.

So far, outside of taking a rock through the AC condenser, it's just been preventative maintenance. It hasn't had any issues and still drives like new.

I have this engine in my 2008 Mitsubishi Outlander CUV (3395 lb curb weight). 168HP mated with the CVT. Good engine with sufficient power and torque for wife and I. EPA rating was 20/25 mpg. I get about 21mpg around city and can get about 27 mpg on highway if I stay at 65mph or under.

Mitsubishi uses the long life coolant. Cap says 5W-20, but owners manual gives leeway based on temp and dealer uses 10w30 here in Phoenix.
