working out of a storage unit unit

So about once or twice a month i'll run my generator for about 30 minutes to cut some boards to do some carpentry work. I even asked the manager if it was ok to run a generator and she was like it's ok. Of course that was like 2 years ago. Anyways, I would say about 40 percent of the people have a "shop" in their unit. There are a couple people people I see everytime I got over there cause they do cabinet work and cut boards and such. Most have been there 10 years or more. I've been their probably 8 years now.

All the people who work their know me on a first name basis. I'm just curious as to why it seems I got singled out. Half the time I can't drive to my unit without seeing someone working on something inside their unit. Should I just find another storage facility? One with good electricity? lol Of course this was a month ago that I got a letter cause I rarely check the mail. My guess is someone driving by complained about the generator. The funny thing is I see the workers who live onsite working on their cars all the time. One guy is the husband to the manager and he works on his car. That kind of irks me that they have the nerve to send me a letter.

Your problem is that people live onsite. Most gens are loud.

Consider ditching the generator and getting a power inverter on your vehicle? Your vehicle should be much quieter than a portable generator. Was your letter concerning loud noise? Seems like the saw would be way louder than anything else.

No it didn't say anything about loud noise. Maybe it was a generic letter sent out to everyone. I don't even think I ran the generator for a month or so before the date on the letter. I'm surprised they didn't just call me.

I would take that letter straight to the manager and ask if they would be so kind as to loan you an extension cord...Or explain the meaning of the letter.

Several years ago when I was building my own home in an existing neighborhood and working on it on weekends, my next door neighbor complained about my ****ing generator noise early on Saturday. He actually cursed me to my face.

My response was, "Gee, I don't want to hear the noise either; why don't you loan me an electric cord?" He said "Good idea." and did. We got along after that. I found out later he worked second shift and tried to sleep in on Saturday.

You really don't know unless you ask.

I am 99% certain the one I looked at said you couldn't actually put anything in the storage unit or enter the premises.

Cause I still see people working out of their units. I don't see the manager hand signing 250 letters, but I guess it's not that hard to do. You're right though I didn't think about that.

Go walk around and look for a plug. There's bound to be one somewhere on the end of a building or around some corner. Then go to Home Depot and buy 1 or 2 100' extension cords. They don't cost much.

I'm a good 600ft away from where the office workers live, plus their are storage units in between me and where they live so I don't think they hear anything. It couldn't be any louder than the main road they live right next to.

It already has one, but the problem is I'm right in the middle of the string of units, so the voltage drop is so big that it won't start any kind of capacitor start motor. It will run something small like a drill or sander. Basically I just use the generator when using the big tools.

Keep it up. Worst thing they can do is kick you out. If someone's living there, well, that's on them. They don't have a right to "quiet enjoyment" because it's not a "domicile."

+1, let them send you a notice to leave. I doubt it would get to that point. And even if it did, well, you were considering doing it anyway.

consider building a box with insulation etc to cover the generator to help dampen the noise.

its what some people do when they take their generators to campgrounds. etc.

It was a bit facetious - but the lease agreements on storage units are extremely restrictive.

Even apartment leases ... the lease on my apartment states I can't use the balcony attached to my apartment or the small storage unit attached to my apartment. Also says that there are no moving vans allowed on the property.

Unfortunately, that won't work on some...the loudest generators need lots of airflow or they will overheat.
