I have looked up Wolf's Head Super Universal Synthetic ATF and saw on there spec. sheets that they do not list any Ford's specs on there application chart. The latest edition was in 2015. Earlier versions had then listed. Why would that be? Is it ok to still use for Mercon V?

I think Ford recommended against using universal fluid for those ones that took Mercon V if I remember correctly.
It could be due to the thinner viscosity. Wolfs head universal atf viscocity is 6.2 cst at 100C whereas Mercon V is 7.5. For anything Mercon V i use a licensed one, Castrol imv. It is cheap and available locally.
Wolf's Head is Amalie. It is good stuf You can use it where Mercon V is required with no problem

GM backspeced Dexron VI with earlier ones. I bet VI is lower viscosity over III. Does Ford do same thing?

Bingo, the most logical answer. Will they eventually obsolete Mercon V, probably. They may need to be specific which applications can't backspaced if that what it takes. I read the DEXRON history in Wikipedia and this is what it says about the viscosity: "Dexron VI is of a slightly lower viscosity when new compared to the prior Dexron fluids (a maximum of 6.4 cSt at 100 °C for Dexron VI and 7.5 cSt for Dexron III), but the allowed viscosity loss from shearing of the ATF during use is lower for Dexron VI, resulting in the same lowest allowed final viscosity for both Dexron III and VI (5.5 cSt) in test.[21] In reality most of the DEXRON-III fluids typically sheared to about 4.2 cSt in use."
This post is without doing any extra background research but if my memory serves me right mercon was 7.3 cst at 100C but shears like dexron 3 and mercon v is 7.5 but much more stable. So their starting viscosities match up very well, however, mercon v was specifically reformulated to be backspecced to mercon also. Along with that some mercon v applications state it is good up to like 100k miles or something of the such whereas mercon was 30k. I can tell you i personally have used a low viscocity fluid in an origional mercon application and it worked out pretty well however for things that require mercon v i go with licenced mercon v. Who knows what will happen when they obsolete mercon v?
Ford may obsolete Mercon V someday, but don't sweat it. As long as there are old Fords on the road the oil companies will supply an appropriate, all be it unlicensed, fluid. With how long regular old Mercon been "obsolete," there are quarts of suitable DexMerc fluid in every convenience store in the country. My wife's rig calls for Ford SP fluid, and I'm confident that it will be available in some form or another for decades.
I have owned several F-150's with the AOD type transmission. They all required Mercon V fluid. When I lived in FL. I had several Ford tech friends. 2 of them worked at Gator Ford, 1 worked at Brandon Ford, and they all were trained to work on these transmissions.. I had wanted to use Mobil 1 ATF fluid in my 97 F150's 4R70W trans. They ALL 3 said DON'T! So, being they were Ford techs that were familiar with this transmission, I listened to them. They said the 3 name brands of Mercon V that meet Ford specs are;
Motorcraft, Castrol, and Super Tech. These are the only Mercon V fluids I have ever used in my AOD type transmissions.

Yep. When I done my Ford factory training it said they don’t recommend anything but Mercon V and those brands you nailed it there.
What has Ford told you? Nothing, other than you must buy our stuff. Try asking for the details of why it won’t work, and you will be told it is all proprietary. That crap you know. That is it. Nothing more. To become a Ford tech, you are just being trained to think like them. When Ford says jump, the tech response how high? I know this with the certification with my job. You represent what your certified in. In saying all this, there are aftermarket that truly do test there stuff. What GM said, likely have truth that apply to Ford. Ford won’t tell you that till they obsolete the spec.

No they said other than Mercon V you shouldn’t use other stuff due to lack of additives and other stuff that will be in the specified formula. We are trying to help you here but you don’t want to listen.
You asked for the documentation from Ford and I provided it. Now you are just going to naysay it and call it crap? Most people would say thank you. Now you are just calling it crap, oh well. So why did you ask for the Ford documentation?
Ford is not telling you to just buy their stuff: Ford is telling you some of their stuff is different from their other stuff, so you must be sure to use the right one. It does not have to be their own Motorcraft brand, they license their spec to some other ATF companies.
