What kind of filter media are the above 3 running? I was under the impression wix is using a thick cellulose (paper) media, PureOne was using a "micronic" media (what is that?) and I'm not sure about baldwin. Anyone care to comment?

now this is what i heard from the parts guys in the Truck dealership that i work at. I asked who built the wix filters, I was changing filter on an old n-14 cummins. wix is what was on there. baldwin is the one that builds wix and i wouldnt be suprised if pureone in built by them. its just a paper element in all of them. Baldwin is the manufacturuer of them they just build to company specs is all.
Baldwin, Wix, and Purolator all build their own filters. Parts guys can be quite clueless about who builds what parts they sell.
Yep Baldwin is Baldwin.Wix is Wix. Purolater is Purolater[Bosch] .Usually unless it is some low volume or speciality filter. i remember the air filter on my 92 toy 4x4 had a round filter and 4 major brands had the filter made by the same mfg. Nippon Denso.
Isn't the media in Pure One a synthetic media? I'm sure that Wix is paper too. I had a problem with oil flow (higher oil pressure)using Pure One filters on my Silverado, pressure went down to normal with Wix.

PureOne might be a blend but it is not a synthetic media.

ok. so the medias are comparable/close. I want the wix coil spring, but not the 2pc bypass valve. that thing looks like it will leak/bypass unfiltered oil.
Actually tests I have seen said the Wix may possibly leak dirty oil as the bypass valve seals metal on metal but it would be a small amount and it would be taken care of at start up and filtered back... I like Bosch new spring

yeah, you really have to wonder how the metal/metal seal works out. Here we are trying to filter out micron particles and you have a metal/metal sealing surface...brilliant. Best bypass valve I've seen was today on the Motorcraft FL400S. That thing was badarse man. The only thing that filter needs is a coil spring instead of a leaf, and it's the shizil. And the price is good too. I'm trying it next go around, if I don't have any startup noise I'll continue using it.

You know, I cut open the Motorcraft 400S today and that bypass takes up a ton of space in the filter. As you know that is the bigger filter for our Tacomas but the space inside the filter is about the same as the smaller spec'd filter. I'm not convinced 100% about Motorcraft/Purolator yet. I want plenty of flow with deep pleats in the media and a heavily built can. The Baldwin fits that description and for 3000 mile OCI's, that is the one for me. Our filters don't hang upside down so the bypass doesn't need to be on the base end.
