Wix v. Napa (Gard) for bypass application?

Ok, I've been using the Napa 1101 (Gard) on my Allis-Chalmers G tractor. Locally, I have a choice between it, and the Wix 51101, which uses a paper media per their web page

The Napa filters, at least the ones that I'v bought before, used what appeared to be cotton waste as the media. Which would be a better filter? I think that it is a bypass system, so perhaps the Napa filter would be better?

I already posted asking for oil suggestions, so I'm sorry for repeating, but the tractor has been in my family since new, on a steady diet of non-detergent oil, and low hours per year.

If both supply's are up-to-date so to speak..the Wix and Napa Gold filters should be exactly the same with a different name on the can. If they both have an orange ADBV (if your application even has one), then they aer both the same.

Unless your supplier is using very very old stock, Both of the filters are identical. The only difference being the printing on the can and the leading 5 in the Wix number. Gard was setup by Wix as a front company when NAPA started private branding of their filters. Check out the addresses on each item, Both are in Gastonia, NC. The same is true for Carquest Filters. All 3 brands are manufactured on the same manufacturing lines.

Yes, in recent times at least, Wix = Napa Gold = Carquest Premium Blue. Different paint jobs but otherwise the same. Unless your filter is old or a specialized industrial application, I believe the "cotton waste" media is pretty old school and no longer the case. The old, very thick depth filters (cotton, rice hulls, etc.) are good in that they have higher capacity by spreading their particle load throughout the depth of a thick filter media. But with minimal operating time with your tractor, there's no reason a typical paper media would even come close to clogging, and modern paper/synthetic blended medias filter better than ever. My suggestion is that you can't go wrong with the stock Wix or Napa Gold filter called for by their website.

By the way, why non-detergent oil? I thought that, except for a few specialty applications (and possibly rebuilt engine break-in), that oil had gone the way of the dodo bird...
