Hey Everyone:

Looking to change from my OEM air filter and want your opinions on the Wix Air Filter.

I would use an Amsoil air filter but they don't make one for my model. Fram makes one but I can't find it anywhere Fram's are sold, so I purchased the Wix one.

I use the Napa ProSelect air filter on my truck, and it's every bit as good and better than OE. Never had a single problem with it. The ProSelect is made by Wix to Napa's specs.

The Wix filter is made by Wix to meet their own specs, but is more expensive. If Napa has a Napa Gold air filter for you, it is a re-badged Wix.

Wix makes great filters. No worries with either one.

Insolubles aren't really what you're looking at when determining filter performance. Silicon (silica) is a more direct measurement of foreign dirt ingestion, amongst other things. The bulk of the time, high silicon means a leak in the system, either from poor filter fit or warped airbox, or loose clamp.

FWIW, most all standard paper filters are in the 98-99% efficiency range. It's highly unlikely you will see much if any variance between any stardard paper filters. Wix makes good filters. So does Purolator. Fram AIR filters are actually pretty good too (although I avoid their oil filters like the plauge). Personally, I'd buy which ever is easiest to find. Good luck!

My Insolubles were high and so was the Silicon, but I know that I don't have any gasket leaks because I had the hole engine checked.

Terry thinks that the Insol. and Silcon was high due to an air filter that isn't filtering properly. My OEM filter is cotton or something similar and not paper.

Fram makes a filter but it's impossible to find, as I have checked many Walmarts, so that's why I bought a WIX.

Interesting... well, you picked a great filter anyway. I'm curious what your next UOA looks like.

I cleaned my engine using ARX and I'm doing the rinse now. Once it's done I will put in fresh oil and run for 3K and do a UOA, then I will change to a wix filter with a fresh oil change and do another UOA after 3K and compare... This way only one element has changed with each oil change.

I think it's the filter...

I don't think I would feel bad using a Wix, I did try a Fram air filter back in the 90's in my old neon (thinking they would be fine), I had it in for 10k miles and the thing never got dirty! I swapped it out for a Purolator (I think, or some other brand) and it trapped all kinds of dirt within a few thousand miles. I couldn't figure out what was going on with the Fram but that was when I wrote off their air filters too.

I don't know if it had a tear I couldn't see or just wasn't letting anything through.
