Took a few weeks to taking it easy on the highway much to the dislike of fellow commuters. Average speed 55-60mph, careful shifting, no spirited driving, 90% highway.

2003 !echo!, 125K miles, RL5W-20 in the crankcase, some FP3K and RL in the gearbox. Loop of 784 miles brought in a MPG rating of 50.16 Wondering if I should cut the AC belt.... lol.

Probably won't be able to keep driving this speed, too many people bearing down on my rear, weaving around me etc.

Gotta stay @ 65 just to keep alive...

-Thomas.

Nice. Did the same around town for the last tank in the vibe, got 31.42, which is 3-4 mpg more than avg. city and much more like hwy mileage. Funny thing is I arrive at my destination in the same amount of time, much to the dismay of the red light racers that blow by me while I'm smoothly cruisin' along.

I'm starting to get some twisted pleasure driving like a geezer...

I found that on a trip of 1170 miles to Fl. limiting my top speed to 65 mph only added about 45 minutes to my trip. I save 3.25 gallons of gas by running a maximum of 65 mph in the 70 mph zones during the trip. I may be saving 6.5 gallons but I'm also saving some wear and tear on the car also. 6.5 gallons at $3.30 per gallon for premium I save $21.45 for the trip.

You guys can have your savings and feel good, I'm gonna continue to break speeding laws every chance and revel in the feeling!

Paid speeding fines in the past perfectly willing(not anxious) to do so again.

Who needs a hybrid?

Yep, lightweight car and small engine = simple formula for MPG. Why have the automakers forgotten?

I miss all the 1.4-1.7L 2000lb manual trannied cars that were common years ago. 40+ mpg was so easy to get.

The hypocrites driving their teen MPG land yachts, or driving under the influence of road rage, always are the most vocal about gas prices.

Put four bent rims on a small car and you have no choice but to go 55-60. I didn't know they were bent at the time but I'm getting 40mpg because of it.

Wire a relay into the alternator field coil connection so it's only energized when you're braking (tap it into the brake light circuit).

Regenerative braking

I just took a long road trip across a few states, going 65-75 the entire way, I got 5mpg, which is 35.82mpg, over the EPA estimate for my car, not to mention a couple of standstills in construction zones and stopping for food/bathroom a couple of times, and a car full of people/luggage!

I began the ARX rinse phase a day before I left, i'm not sure if it's because of the ARX cleaning, or the recent warmer weather. I've been using FP60 for the past few months so I don't think that's the reason, it's never given me this big of a boost

My 4 cylinders are geezer engines. I get the honk at a stoplight then cut off cuz I'm not flooring it. but I'm raking 32 mpg

Had to zip north to pick something up; had plenty of time before the rendezvous point. Kept it at 55 all the way. Gas was cheaper so I topped 'er off. 44 mpg, not scientific b/c not the same pump 2x in a row. But encouraging.

Old crotchety coots across the land welcome you to the ranks.

Upcoming 1,600 mile trek, pondering the plausability of poking along at 65 mph vice the 75 allowed for much of the trip.

And, considering dropping down to 55 mph when ascending sundry uphill grades.

But, boredom factor may compel Coot to hammer down, accepting the decreased mpgs, and scooting along at 75 mph.

If broadcast TV news was reporting this yah' know the teleprompter-reading babbler would assert THE WORLD is breathlessly watching to see what decision Coot will make.

May report upon return what Coot decided to do and what mpgs were attained with the 5,000 pound engine of death and destruction with the 4.8 liter-sized 8-cylinder engine coupled to the 4-speed auto tranny rotating the steel driveshaft sending propuksive power to the 3.73 ratio differential device that ultimately rotates the 16-inch round rubbery things where the power meets the Earth's surface.

Of course, the world will be eagerly anticipating the possible future reportage of the trip.

May even take some pics to shock and awe the masses perched upon their chairs in avid anticipation of any possible posts regarding the trip.

For those wanting to clutch onto every possible aspect of the trip post thine map upon the wall and, from the general vicinity of Omaha Nebraska trace I-80 to Sacramento California then Highway 99 south to a wee bit south of Turlock California, a couple miles west of Hwy 99 a few mile north of Hilmar CA.

Retrace route for trip back to the shanty.

Donations accepted and signed pics available at a nominal fee, if taken.

As seen on TV.

Film at 11.

That is, if Coot survices the journey...... what with the masses of idiots filling the highways and byways, in semi-control of their conveyances with a mere 7 or 8 brain cells devoted to the task of driving their engine of death and destruction.

Boy Howdy.

Yep.

I don't have a problem with people going less than the posted limit (70mph 'round these parts). But, make sure you're NOT in the left and/or HOV lane when attempting this feat!

The right lanes are for the slower vehicles. I had some guy in his early '90's smurf blue Ford Escort (azzcart) going all of 59mph in the left lane. Sir, MOVE OVER. He did have that glazed-over look on his face where he had not a clue that traffic was flashing at him, passing him, etc.

If this was New York or Chicago or LA, he would have been given the finger. Here, people just stare in amazement that a person could be so clueless.

OK, back on topic now...

That is an idea!

I have found the brake pedal is much more expensive than the accelerator and use it as little as possible.

RAMMING SPEED!!!!!!!!!!!
I'll get them 55mph guys out of the left lane one way or the other.
The slow lane is on the left side in Mexico...so when those folks come to live here they drive 55mph in the left lane....many folks have left=fast right=slow in Spanish bumper stickers on the back of their trucks

Me....I have a Immigration Officer windshield banner

Funny you mentioned Chitown. Three weeks ago coming home on the tollway from the inlaws, minding my own business at 65 mph (ten over) on the right lane and some idiot in a Blazer starts riding my back bumper and flashing the headlights (there was a Tahoe ahead of me on the center lane, but the left lane was open). I'm like what the heck is wrong with this bozo??? I kept my pace and when the idiot finally passed on the left lane, we exchanged some mutual fingering...

It's because of idiots like that that I favor the use of a national ID and dropping drivers licenses as main form of ID, and then toughening the licencing requirements. Getting a drivers license is as easy as getting a toy out of a happy meal.

Ahh.. the mutual finger, used that many a time

I can't stand people like that. I remember one time I was driving home and decided to take the backroads, and there was this little old mazda protege in front of me, weaving all over the road, doing about 15-20mph (45mph speed limit) I waited behind him for a minute hoping he'd speed up a bit realizing someone else was behind him, then I just peeped my horn once, thinking maybe that would wake him up. Waited another minute or so, and peeped again and passed him, and he proceeded to give me the finger, when he was the one being a dangerous driver, and proceeded to make use of my moonroof and give him two fingers, one out of my window, one out of the moonroof

My mom was actually following me and saw what happened, and gave them it as well
