Wiper mechanism help

About a month ago, my wipers began running off the edge of the drivers side windshield then slam into the base. I was told by a mechanic this was due to a bad motor. Car is 2005 Honda Accord with 170K and had original wiper motor. So I replaced the motor but generally have the same issue, plus the wipers wont come to a rest at the bottom of the windshield. They come back up about 6 inches every time, even when I turn them off. I'm not sure what to do to correct. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I had a similar problem on a friend's 1998 Civic a few years ago. Motor was bad, Napa had a hard time finding the exact replacement in their catalog, so they matched it up visually with the one they had that best matched the original motor. I installed the new motor and it worked OK but the wipers still always parked about 6 inches up from the cowl. I do not think the motor from Napa was the correct one for her car. I tried to re-orient the wiper arm so they would park corectly, but I never was able get it right. My friend said it was OK with her, it was an old car and she did not care, as long as the wipers still worked OK, so we just left it as is, but it aggravated me every time I saw her car after that. In your case it might be the same thing, especially if you used an aftermarket wiper motor. Maybe check with the Honda dealer or a junk yard and try OEM. Also be sure the linkages for the wiper arms work OK and the linkage is oriented correctly on the wiper motor shaft.

If the arms are tightened down and the motor is correct, you may be looking at what's called the wiper transmission--the linkage assembly that's driven by the motor.

You also have a semi complicated linkage with joints that should be looked at. Metal arms with ball joints.
