I’d previously upgraded from windows 10 to 11. I took the “keep your files and apps” route. The computer ran ok, but Office 2016 was sluggish. I decided to bite the bullet and wipe the disc and do a proper install. First, I took screen shots of the installed apps, saving the pix to my back up drive. I backed up all files to the backup drive. The fresh install went smoothly. My current now runs so much better and somewhat faster.

YMMV

Always reimage of you have the ability too. 99.9% of the issues I run across with Windows always end up being junk leftover from the OEM programs (especially the OEM drivers and updater programs) that people end up blaming windows.

Yep, even when I buy a new PC I install a fresh image of Windows.

IMO, it's not a case of "YMMV", it's always going to be a better outcome. I can't imagine the number of computers out there with years and years of old, garbage still on them from repeated upgrades.

Very smart. Just saw a post on Reddit the other day where someone bought a refurb Corsair PC directly from Corsair. And it was infected out of the box. Jury's still out on whether Corsair failed to clean up the system properly or whether Corsair has an infected image or network.

Don't get me started on the generic Amazon/eBay Mini PCs. They can be great but... don't use them the way they ship. Yes you'll probably lose your fake Windows license if you re-install, but plenty of solutions to that beyond running some sketchy install that's been passed around who knows how many hands.

I found a clean install always better than an upgrade, or keep the files and apps route. It takes more time but is well worth it imo.

That's exactly what I have done for years, either workstations or servers.

I remember talking with Dell Support years ago about an unrelated issue and told them that the first thing I do when I receive their workstations or servers is to blow out their factory install and reload the OS from scratch! By their response, they were dumbfounded why anyone would do that!

After I reinstalled the apps and drivers I cloned the drive to another SSD using Samsung Magician. Took a while but it’s done.
