I need a new one and I'm looking for 12,000 or bigger. Any good brands that you would recommend the used one I bought for $100 the compressor died and I don't want to be without in this heat.
In Miami where some of the older condos, apts and homes do not have central A/C Freidrich seems to be the top choice..It's also a favorite A/C in NYC...I had a Freidrich when I lived in NYC and had no issues with it and it was on all summer long.
I know but $800+ USD for their 11,700 BTU model versus $429 Canadian from Sears Canada for a 12,000 BTU Kenmore with a 5 year warranty is a big difference.
Those Freidrich look well built, but that's a bit steep unless it came with like a 10 year warranty or there were rave reviews on them that they were hands-down the best and built like sherman-tanks.

Ours is a 5500 btu window unit... Nice and quiet, as well as efficient!
I was looking to get a 12,000 because the one I had was a 10,000 and it worked great and kept the apartment at 69F on a 90F day. My apartment was just under 1,000 Sqft and the new one is about the same but a different layout.
I want the extra 2,000 BTU's because of the layout and how close the window will be to the kitchen which will negate some of the cooling while I'm cooking. (Hard to describe)
I've got a Fridgidare in my room. I recomend that you stay away from that brand. The one I have came with the tube to the expansion valve installed on the wrong side of the evaporator which allowed the evap to freeze solid. Now it appears to be low on refrigerant.........Only 1/3 of the evap is cool. I guess I'll have to take it down, take it to work and recharge it.
Stevie, we just installed a 10K BTU unit in my finacee's parents living room, smaller than what you want I know, but while shopping, found a GE 12k BTU unit for about $350. The GE they got seems quite competant, on a 90+ degree day, it was putting out "ice-cold air"
Summerwind I sent you a PM for the retailer selling the G.E. as most likely I will purchase one Stateside to save on the sales tax and the price because our dollar is almost at part with yours anyways.
I always go to the dollar store and cheese cake factory on my trips and always make sure that there are bags of cheese cakse in the back seat that the customs officer can see when he makes me roll down my back tinted window and when asked what I was doing I'm very slow in responding and say... Well, I went to the dollar store, and ... uh ... uh... Cheese cake factory, and it's usually at this point the guy says, any alcohol or tobacco? and I say no, and I try to continue with, and then we went to... uh... uh... and by this time he says something like, ok you are good to go.
Works every time.
Plus the fact that I go at least once a month so I have lots of trips logged on their little computer system so they can see most likely I'm telling the truth, and I am, I'm just slow about it. If they wait long enough I would tell them, oh yeah and a $400 air-conditioner which I think I need to pay duty on.

Not if he brings it back like this:
one SWEET ride! even the tail light is great! i would think for the cost of a generator and the a/c unit and everything else needed to do that (even if bought used) would cost more then just fixing the a/c the car came with.
Yeah I remember that when I got it in an e-mail ages ago.
I actually had my partner check on A/C's at the store he is working at temporarily till he finds a permanent job that makes the money he should be making with his University Degree.
He can get me a Danby or a Royal something and it's a 12,000 BTU portable A/C & Humidifier unit that has 2 hoses that go to the window. I'm not convinced these are as good... (Your thoughts?)
I also talked to my aunt that lives in Ottawa (5 hours away from me) and she works for Sears and can get me 15% off a Kenmore (Window Box style) model which are Consumers Best Buy apparently, and have me pick it up at a local store if I just send her money.
