Went from Win 7 64 to Win 8.1 64.
Next morning 10 gig was gone win old two directories (now its 50 gig plus everything is gone) from my upgrade to win 7 and upgrade to 8.1. What is going on with Microsoft they dont even ask me, just delete my files, even the directory that has nothing to do with Win 8.1. Who the heck wrote his script were they completely Bonkers.
With no prompts and no warnings.

Even my Win 7 upgrade they deleted two different directories now I have to buy a software to fix this program error.
Does Microsoft have a free recovery program for us?
They need to roll one out ASAP!!!
What program does anyone suggest to find and auto recover data, not a program that you have to manually look at every file and tell it where to recover to, I have millions of files, this is utter and total garbage from MS.
This all occurred within a couple days, I have only had 8.1 for a week now.
8.1 did not move any of my programs at all 8.1 kept all of my programs in Win old, now they are all gone and not just my program folders everything to do with my old win installs they are all gone.
The first two programs I tried asked me which files to recover file by file no directories and where to move it to manually, with millions of files this will not work.
No other Windows has done this to me.
Thank you in advance.

There should have been a screen that asked you to:

"Keep personal files only" or "Nothing." Which did you choose?

The Windows 7-8 upgrade worked well. Windows 7-8.1 will just bring the data forward.

I wonder what 10 will do?

Did you make a backup first?

I had a similar issue when upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8, it completely deleted everything on my hard drive. I was getting some errors when trying to do the upgrade, so I called Microsoft and had them guide me through it, and they ended up erasing everything, even though I told them not to. Good times.

I chose Keep personal files which sounds better than keep nothing.
That dosnt answer the question why it deleted 2 different Windows.old folders.
After the upgrade I checked windows.old everything was there so I could use it or move it in then I went to bed, in the morning all the files from win7 old were all gone.

Don't mean to troll but just gave up on windows and went with Ubuntu and wow! It just works. I have spent to many hours of my life fiddling around with windows of almost every flavor.

This entitled society that's too common these days. Microsoft doesn't have to do anything. You fell. Dust yourself off and move on. Chalk this up as a lesson by backing up your stuff before you upgrade. Especially the most important files that'll make you cry if you lost it.

I've lost many files and memories from my ignorance over the years. I don't post my tears on a forum and expect anything from or blame MS about it.

My best advice for you is to find a computer friend geek to help you change your folder/file view settings. Chances are the files are still there. Perhaps the permissions changes so your new OS user can't see it or it's simply just marked as a hidden or system file.

Best of luck.

Wow A_ss class A.
It deleted folders it should not have touched.
It looks like some sort of bug that hasnt been fixed.
Hidden files really!! One of the things I do in the first 10 mins of an install is to expose all files you troll.

While it should not have done this....

Rule #1 in updating: Back up your files before you think about clicking ok to update.

Funky stuff happens during updates and next thing you know, you've lost everything.
