Why the push for Autonomous driving?

I can see where someone will get into one of these cars to go to the airport. They are running late so they ask the car if they can take shortcuts to speed things up.

I’m sorry Dave, I can’t do that.
Yeah but they might take the fastest route with latest GPS and traffic info because the more people these things move, the more profits for the company. Chances are they will be more efficient than a human being for sure.

Sorry for the loss of some of your aquatinces.

I would ask this question- if every motor vehicle accident found both drivers at fault no matter what at least 30 percent, would the number of accidents be reduced? Would drivers become more aware and defensive in their driving?

As your car becomes better able to send information to "the cloud", don't be surprised if auto insurance companies not only charge an annual premium, but start billing a driver supplementally every month for miles driven.
Automobiles represent Freedom. They always have. Freedom to go where you want when you want. I think this rubs some people the wrong way, thus the drive to control this freedom. Gon, your comments started me thinking in this direction. I hadn't thought about this when I posed the question.

Of the fatal car accidents that I know some of the details, apportioning blame probably wasn't going to be a factor as they were on a highway. A couple have been just straight distracted driving... And one was teenager poor decision/risk reward analysis for a pass.... I'm sure none involved expected to have a chance of a major crash in the moments before it happened.
I do see people in town driving a bit aggressively, but nearly all of those accidents aren't major.
We have no fault insurance here which I think kind of looks at accident details, but if you keep on getting in more than your share of fender benders, you will pay more regardless of fault...

The more I think about it, its really the highways that need automated driving first, in terms of saving lives. Implement some sort of "slot car" system with a wire in the pavement or metal plates or something, and have some simple over the air communications between local cars or simple radar to detect how far away the next car is. I think the tech is available now to do this, but getting everyone to agree on standards and designing the right system the first time is tough, then actually building the infrastructure would be cost a bit, and having the system handle human drivers in the mix is more complicated.
IMO there's no technology barrier, just the public isn't ready for it yet.
Virginia Tech has an autonomous highway they built years ago. They have been researching it for many years. I haven't heard of much coming from that. Maybe something to google.

If you are worried about autonomous cars:

1. Buy a motorcycle
2. Buy funds and stocks that support things other than autonomous vehicles and vehicle research
3. Avoid VCs that provide funding for these things.
4. Oh, and don't buy an electric car (no humans needed to handle hazardous liquid fuels). Very easy to fully automate and "refuel" compared to ICE.

Otherwise, you are just along for the ride (pun intended) - subject to the whims of capitalism, technology, and someone else's idea of transportation.
I wouldn't want to be on a motorcycle with a lot of autonomous cars/trucks.

There is no push. It's just another made up fad to dump money into which is part of the AI bubble.

Why the push for autonomy.....

Older people lose their autonomy bit by bit as skills and reaction time degrade, first at night, then in heavy traffic.
Losing autonomy is a terrible thing for them and their families who now either leave mom and dad, grandma and grandpa on the couch, or take their own time to shuttle them around.

Young inexperienced people have no guardrails to keep them safe from themselves or us from their lack of skills and poor habits like phone use while driving.

If the car can safely fill in the skill gap everyone wins.

I know you are just using a retorical tool here, but we've started down a path that will get this thread locked.
You made a statement and I asked for clarification. Not only do I not see how that would get the thread locked, but I'd still like an answer to my question. What did you mean?

Humans have automated everything they can, as long as technology allows. It was only time until vehicles was part of that.

And that goal of owning nothing is exclusive of themselves; just the plebes own nothing. It's the same mindset as Marx & Engels, and has had the same results no matter where its been tried throughout history. Shared responsibility is no responsibility.
I think it's vastly different than what Marx and Engels wrote - ownership of means of production by the workers has very little in common with everything owned by a handful persons.

It's just a derivative as far as I see it. Rather than just controlling what you can buy, those who control go so far as to continually extract energy via the "renting" phase. How long until we see apartments or rental homes advertised as "Housing as a Service (HaaS)?

And I only used those two as an example of the mindset, because even mentioning some of the people who put those ideas into effect could be considered political. I was just talking about their ideas of communal usage, and "From those according to their skills, to those according to their needs". Except the "needs" is from the ones at the top, determined by themselves, because they definitely possess no worthwhile skills of creation. They're leeches.

The "Smart Summon" can still roll through a stop sign.... so who/what gets points on their license for moving violations?
Although I’ve been out of the game for a while (haven’t issued a summons in over 25 years), IIRC the wording in the VTL is something to the effect of “The operator of the vehicle…..”. The operator is defined as the individual who is in custody and control of said vehicle.
Now don’t quote me, but if motivated I’ll dust off the old VTL and look it up.
